I personally really like this commentator.

Anybody’s better than Cooper, we could be getting whooped 7-0 & he’d still spin it that we’re world beaters!

To be fair it was a bit of a tricky second half to commentate, seeing as we decided to just basically switch off the engine and do nothing for 25 minutes. He mostly stopped reading out scores towards the very end.

It’s preferences but i’d prefer silence than reading out scores and being distracted from the barnsley game so much.

Maybe just me but i can’t even take anything from the reading out of scores. especially this early i have no idea where anyone is in the table, what a 2-1 win for x team will do for them etc.

I don't know the name of the commentators but the bloke that used to do it with Wayne Goodison was miles better than the current regular one and the fella today was just terrible.

I agree, although I probably wouldn't have minded as much if it had at least been focused on our own league. I do probably have enough of a vague idea of the shape of the table to know that Stevenage going ahead is somehow relevant to my interests - I have absolutely no interest in whatever nonsense Burnley are getting up to against Manchester United!

I wouldn’t want silence but I wouldn’t mind interesting facts about our players or theirs or either club in general at appropriate times. Or even the ref. Things that were relevant to our match and had been researched in advance and not Googled during it. He was alright when he concentrated and spoke at a normal speed about whatever was happening on the pitch but he kept looking at other things and it seemed to take away his ability to form a coherent sentence.

It's not an easy thing to do, and most of the people criticising won't ever have been near a microphone. It's also very subjective, one person's Barry Davies may be another person's Sam Matterface. Criticism is fine, but make it constructive; people learn and grow through constructive criticism.

It's not easy doing commentary. Even harder if you're solo with nobody to bounce off.

I say this having not heard the comms today so apologies if it was proper embarrassing.

As for Matt, he’s a good mate of mine and someone I’ve known for donkeys.

Much bigger issues in the world innit.

Was there no summariser today? Odd if so, especially for a big game.

I dunno bud, I didn’t listen. But considering the comments in the thread, it appears it was a brand new guy doing a solo. Never easy.

I try and give people the benefit of the doubt but it honestly wasn’t great. You know when you’re speaking and also reading something and it takes you ages to say a word or sentence? Imagine that for half the game because he was reading other scores to figure out which ones he’s not read out yet or google searching stuff.

Other than that he honestly wasn’t bad. When he had stretches actually focusing on the game he’s commentating he did a good enough job and was quite enjoyable.

I'm glad you mention this. It was a great result and an excellent performance, but, with so much attacking talent in our side, as well as the extra man, I got rather frustrated by our passive approach for the first 25 minutes of the second half. I like to see the ball in the opposition half more. Only a minor quibble, but we have become so used to seeing unforced errors at the back. Overall, though, I was delighted and impressed.
