It was probably more likely the transformer at the base. Each pylon has its own transformer. Sometimes they do fail and can overheat. I’m pretty sure that this same issue happened a few years ago too at Oakwell. TBF, it’s not the kind of thing you go around renewing until they stop working. They’re not cheap!
For some reason I thought the top of the pylon was on fire, thought I'd seen a photo of hoses aimed up, but now I'm pretty sure I imagined it. What you've written makes far more sense.
Ah well im sure we have loads of spare bulbs for the floodlights....just look at our scoreboard......oh hang on!!
These are not investors at all . To invest you put money into a business grow it and either reap the dividends or sell on for a profit . These haven’t put a penny into the club other than to purchase shares .
There has to be a level where the landlord is responsible the club can not be responsible for building a new west stand which then the council owns. If the floodlights are setting on fire because they are delapidated then surely the club dont buy the council new ones. It does not make any sense. There is a ditinct difference between maintainence and new build.
Imo there’s no reason for the Council to own Oakwell . All they need do is put into legislation that the land cannot be used or anything other than a sports stadium and training facilities . The onus is on any new owners to build a stadium but not be able asset strip for the land . That’s how I see it anyway .
But the council wouldn't own a new west stand. The club would and it would be free to take it down and move it anywhere it wanted at the end of its lease by reinstating the fully maintained west stand. Likewise a floodlight. It's a metal structure with some electric cables going up it and some lightbulbs at the top. The electric part caught fire and would be replaced or repaired by the leaseholder. At work we own a building and rent an industrial unit too. We recently decided that the rented unit needed more storage space and so we built a new building within the yard of the unit. We did it because it was us who wanted to build something new. The tenancy agreement simply states that it has to be removed when the lease expires although the landlord has agreed that if it is in sound condition it can be left in situ if we choose. No different to if the club chose to build a new west stand.
Somebody said on saturday that the scoreboard is prone to problems when it rains - as it did just before kickoff. Don't know if that's true or not but if it is I would have thought that would be quite simple to fix. Personally (as a former software developer) I'd say they're having software issues, an electrical fault caused by water would just kill the whole thing, whereas at kickoff the screen was blank but clearly powered up, When it eventually came on it was minus the clock - again indicating a software issue.
