I don’t think we play ‘long ball’ we play a mixture under Big Val and I really like it. It’s effective. We do often play the high and long ball out of defence (diagonal usually) but it is done with reason: 1. clear our lines so we don’t get pressed in 2. with the intention of picking up the second ball - you can see they’re set up in this way and as stated above it is effective. We also play through the wing backs a lot. We mix it up and that HAS to be a good thing, so the opposition won’t settle. Much more difficult to play against. I found Struber very frustrating to watch for the opposite reason. The opposition were given time to set back up and it made it really difficult to thread the ball through, as they were all in position. We have some really talented footballers like styles, mowatt, james and the games I am watching do not bypass them. Reminds me a little of the way Republic of Ireland set up in the late 80s / 90s under Jack Charlton. Served them pretty well. We are winning, give me winning football any day.
True. I think how we expected we would play under Bassett and how we actually played were miles apart.
Think it remains to be seen if it’s a great tactic, if we employ it again. Giving the initiative to the opponents could be dangerous. Will it be a great tactic if we don’t get the ball back and the opponents score? No problem with getting the ball in the opponent’s half. I’d just prefer to keep the ball in play, and have them under pressure that way, rather than kicking the ball straight out for a throw in.
