why has Keanu Reeves suddenly appeared in this thread.... in no way did he appear in any films/tv in the 50's/60's .... which was my initial ask.... he was not even close to even being born then.

Good call. And spookily enough, I was only looking at the DVD last night on Amazon and wondering whether to get it. I remember seeing it on telly as a teenager and really enjoying it.

I do have a soft spot for old Horror/Sci-Fi movies, in particular the Hammer and Amicus stuff - though the latter was mainly early 70s I think.

Forbidden Planet would probably be my Sci-Fi choice from the 50s/60s.
Dracula: Prince Of Darkness is one of my fave Horror movies from that era, but pretty much anything with Peter Cushing and/or Christopher Lee would do for me.

Oh, and The Quatermass Experiment too, which successfully combines horror and sci-fi. Great stuff.

I'm glad you posted that because I was very confused for a moment. The war of the worlds remake definitely starred Tom Cruise and Dakota Fanning

One of the worst examples of "Americaniasation" is in the film Master and Commander at the far side of the world. In the film HMS Suprise is chasing a French frigate, the Acheron around Cape Horn and up to the Galapagos. In Patrick O'Brians book the frigate being chased is an American heavy frigate, the Norfolk. It was thought however that the picture of an American frigate being beat by the Royal Navy would not sell well or sit well with the super patriotic yanks so it was changed.
Appreciate that this is a novel but it sums up the mentality.

Quatermass and the Pit was excellent and scared me sh*tless first time I watched it
    Same with The Blob

My favourite though is "Plan 9 from Outer Space". A film so fantastically bad, its brilliant.
