I'd scrap the rule about "coming back from an offside position" If you are onside when you receive the ball you are onside -end of

Why didn't the referee in the Chelsea/Palace game tell Guehi to move away from the Chelsea wall before the kick was taken?
I suspect he didn't because he didn't know the rule until VAR officials told him

It felt like the pushing Caicedo out of the way was why VAR wanted to disallow the goal, so they used this “rule” as their excuse. Ridiculous.

My feeling is that football is the only sport where technology seems to have made it worse. Arguably goal line tech is good.

    reason i say this is:-

Most sports have used tech to check for infringements and the successful ones have employed an appeal. So in cricket a team would appeal to get a review. The issue in fooball is VAR gives even more options to the ref who often are inconsistent. To improve it they bring in another ref (who is also inconsistent) to look at video. So now we amplify things and take a long time doing so while confusing the fans.

For offsides, i dont get how they know if a ball has left the foot, touching a lace to start drawing those chalk lines. What determines when the ball has been played.

We seem intent on making an imperfect game played by humans into a precise robotic ruled event. And again to make it worse we seem to implement it worse than other countries.

The acid test is do people think the game is better for it? There has always been controversy and bad decisions but at least they were understood and visible. Now we don't even know what the decision should be let alone know if its good or bad.

To add even more, the rule makers seem intent on changing rules to solve problems that dont exist. What does the wall and 1m rule aim to achieve and what constant problem did it fix?

i agree that the backpass rule works but a lot of rules (like the goalie 8sec) have been brought in because refs didn't know how or had no desire to implement the rule already there. We have also extended the added time but refs could have done this before if they wanted to.

I have no idea how players know the rules to the game they are paid so highly to play nor fans who pay so much to watch. But i guess it gives a whole new career extension to refs who now can work as consultants and pundits to help us through a game.
