Neck on the block I'd have Scowen and Perkins in for Mowatt and Palmer because I don't think the way we play needs a playmaking midfielder. It relies on closing teams down, harrying the opposition and short passes in the attacking third. If we had more time on the ball it brings the likes of Mowatt and Kane/Plamer/ James into play. At the minute most of our creativity is coming from Styles and Brittain.
We can comment on his attitude though as he was our player - and his attitude appeared, to me anyway, to be pretty awful. Might have been contributing factors to that but getting your head down for Hull doesn't necessarily mean he could give his all for 60 minutes as part of our forward pressing.
Especially that Saturday night after we'd drawn 0-0 at Nottingham Forest and you'd had the odd tipple!
But, the thread is about the level players are at now. Off field issues reaching a conclusion may have helped him, I don't know. All I'm saying is, I think he has attributes that Ismael would rate, if his head's right. He's quick, not lightweight, and knows where the net is. Would still have Brown ahead of him, but he'd challenge Vic and Frieser, while it's too early to judge Morris and Dike.
I was reading the thread the following morning and didn't notice anything different! It did give me a good laugh, though.
I read threads the following morning and cringe. Then Laura says "What you gone red for. Are you o.k?"
I think he's at the level we all know he'd do well at - hence why we signed him. The limited times I've seen Hull play it isn't a high press that demands hard working forward players, so based on where he is now I still don't think he gets a sniff under Val. Interestingly we'll never know - unless we activate the so called buy back clause.
I've really enjoyed this thread and the wide variety of views shared on it. A few months ago, a video was posted on here of the 2-1 home victory over Sheffield United during the 1980/81 season. One poster claimed none of the current players could get in that particular team. Now that team was, in my opinion, the best Barnsley team I've ever seen (although on that particular day Aylott & Pierce weren't playing). However, there's no way either Phil Chambers or Bobby Downes could've been selected in front of Callum Styles, Alex Mowatt is a far better midfielder than Mike Lester, Cauley Woodrow is streets ahead of Glyn Riley and both Jack Walton & Brad Collins are easily superior goalkeepers to Martin New. Just my opinion.
I always think it's a funny one comparing across eras. That team was before my time, so I can't speak as to their specific abilities but if you literally got a time machine, dumped them at our training ground for a few sessions and asked VI if he fancied signing any of them I reckon he'd probably laugh at you just because of fitness. The increases in sports science and conditioning etc are remarkable. On that basis I reckon that if you stuck our squad in a delorean back to 1980 almost all of them would get in the team and run rings round the opposition. On the other hand if you took the old players at 15/16, stuck them in our modern youth system for a few years then with the fitness on top of the skill they'd be fantastic based on what you say about them (and I trust your encyclopaedic knowledge!)
Really sorry didn't mean to come across wrong, I keep looking on my phone while working which I shouldn't do. I was just adding to the debate, it sounded better in my head than it looked written. Best get back to it.
I definitely like your last paragraph. I question your sanity, but I definitely like it! Also, you're probably right with regards to the fitness levels. As you say, had they had the regimes of a modern player, I'm certain they'd show off their undoubted skills & abilities alongside a much higher level of fitness. By the same token, modern footballers would also have to adapt to poorer quality of pitches and, at times, brutal tackling, especially from behind which was perfectly legal.
