There's a whole host of clubs doing some fantastic business, while we've taken absolutely zero advantage of an early window. It's always excuses about why can't rather than a can do attitude. Players are on holiday Nobody else signing players There's no rush We've loads of time Players we want aren't available Season has been done nearly 6 weeks with most retained lists 5 weeks ago and we've had since the end of January planning wise. And you mean like strikers such as clement Rodrigues last minute panic buys or max watters or Sam Cosgrove. Your using an example as if we go out and sign prolific strikers DKD being the exception.
Why do you think we haven't signed anyone yet, given you don't feel any of the reasons you've mentioned above are viable? The players who have signed for other clubs either weren't our targets, or chose another club over us. Unless of course, you think we're not actively trying to get business done. The business done by other clubs really doesn't concern me, so long as we do ours. Out of contract players aren't even available until after pre-season starts anyway.
Last summers window wasn't particularly a roaring success and we left it late, Darrell Clarke became frustrated that we missed out on some of our targets, we ended up playing Stephen Humphrys as a striker for best part of the season in not his natural position. We then woefully failed to correct the situation in January and again brought in some terrible players. Out of contract players are signing for other clubs right now, joining up with their clubs until 1st July doesn't matter in the slightest, clubs are getting organised picking off players and getting their squads organised knowing full well what they've got. Our last 2 transfer windows have hardly been a roaring success, we've waited until the last minute and brought in some poor players so what have we done on the last 2 transfer windows to suggest this one will be any different. If you are happy to defend the last 2 mediocre transfer windows then fair enough, you seem confident we'll bring in players good enough to a have a good season, based on what I've no idea because based off the last 2 windows and frustrations from the last head coach there's little evidence so far it will be any different.
None of that is what I said. Nor did you answer my question. Obviously, the last few transfer windows have been a disaster.
I'll answer it pretty swiftly, we have a sporting director that is utterly utterly useless, so much to the point the last head coach had to lead the way with a zoom meeting in desperation to sign an unfit winger. Based on the emphasis being, getting things in order early, then we're late to the party again and targets in the first part of the window have gone or aren't interested in what we have to offer.
Again, I'm not disputing that. I think you've completely missed the point in my original post. I bid you a good evening.
I'm not sure what part you think I'm missing Archie, we have a poor sporting director should cover it, there is a familiar pattern developing.
If you sign them early, you then have to start paying wages for them to sit there doing nothing but waiting to train That's the Barnsley mentality shrewdness at its finest
Every club pays players to 'sit around waiting to train" every summer. We are only talking a couple of months at most. If you get your players in early then you've got your targets.. they've not gone elsewhere. Way better than looking on the who's left pile.
My apologies, I misread your last reply last night, and I was being a little obtuse because we seem to go through this every summer (I don't me you and me specifically). But I honestly don't get why you think we've missed out on 'getting players in early' when our pre-season doesn't start for another week (and we're back earlier than normal) and the transfer window hasn't even properly opened yet. It's only opened as early as it has because of the Club World Cup. I get your point, and I'm skeptical with Mladen in charge of it, but it looks like that isn't going to change any time soon, and they've said in numerous occasions that Hourihane is going to have more autonomy over transfers, so why not just be a little patient and see what happens. I'd even argue that our best transfers over the last few years have been the ones we've had to wait on. DKD last summer, McAtee the year before, Phillips the year before that. I'm not saying we shouldn't try and get business done early, but there's no real proof that getting done earlier is of any advantage so long as you get the right player. Feel free to quote me in September when we've supplemented the side with an out of contract winger fRoM tHe BoTsWaNaN nInTh DiViSiOn.
As always Archie you make good points and I respect you as a poster, I'm probably frustrated that's all mate and just thought the early window would have presented us with a good opportunity to get the odd one in. The bit of comfort is conor is a smart bloke I'm is much more qualified than me to know who and what he needs to get us closer than last year.
I think your description of frustration is spot on. Yes it's early doors but we're seeing rivals doing business while we repeat the actions of the last few transfer windows which ended badly. As said DKD was a late signing but there we're early posts that we'd bid for him. I, like many, had hoped to see indications of a different approach but as said it's looking a bit familiar..Could be wrong, could be we're waiting for agreements and players returning but sadly as clubs in our league announce deals it feels like we're on the back foot.
DKD was a bit of an anomaly in the sense that it was very public we were interested in him. Usually, we go under the radar with our business. Whether it was leaked by someone itk at this end or Mansfield's, the DKD saga unusually rumbled on in the public eye. I honestly think by the first game at Emley, we'll have signed about 3 players, and none of them will have been names mentioned on here or twitter more than 48 hours before they're announced.
Next 2-3 weeks are really important and we’ll have a clearer picture by the start of July on how our free transfer business looks so not getting too frustrated yet. The concern, as others have said, is that it feels a bit like January again. Club saying they’re trying to go early with business then every week in the Chronicle it says they’re getting closer but deals never seem to get over the line. We might look back in a couple of weeks and be quite pleased with our business and realise the worry was for nothing, but as of yet it’s not convincing.
Fact is the free agents can be signed. We are yet again not doing business early. Maybe if the club had done business early it may boost season tickets.
Fact is, it's about the players we sign, not when we sign them. See Rotherham last season and Charlton the season before.
