?? ... From T'internet..... "When there are words which are formed out of a noise, they are called onomatopoeia. But ‘Hmm’ does not even qualify to be classified as a word. It is only a noise, that you type out when you have nothing better to say. But when you have nothing to say, it is better not to say anything, rather than type ‘hmm’. ‘Hmm’ is condescending. It is disrespectful. It is a waste of time. And it means you should not be having this conversation in the first place."
Helen typed mmm not hmm. Mmm means something is tasty and could have been referring to your mother’s sprouts you like to keep telling us all about.
https://www.hotfridaytalks.com/culture/a-friend-who-replies-with-hmmm-needs-to-be-blocked/?amp It was only a blog thread entry I came across when deciphering the 'Mmm' response' but don't agree that someone should be 'blocked' for using it. That said, I do find single word dismissals of someone's PoV on here rather fatuous (although not as bad as deflecting from the topic and simply trying to score personal points as some do). An example of a fatuous response often used on here by some was "yeah, but Corbyn" which adds nothing to the debate or discussion. EDIT: JD pointed out you said mmm (not hmm) I need a visti to Specsavers.. interesting though see this https://www.theatlantic.com/notes/2015/09/hmm-vs-mmm-vs-mhmm/405868/...
Ah! Must go to Specsavers.... Not sure I remember referencing my mother's Brussel sprouts regularly That said.... https://www.theatlantic.com/notes/2015/09/hmm-vs-mmm-vs-mhmm/405868/
I was being silly really. I just remembered you saying the exact same before about someone’s sprouts and cabbage. The search function says it was 21st November when you posted this:
Be fair .....I've slept (more than once ) since then! My memory isn't what it used to be either. Clearly, as an enthusiastic cook and foodie I must have been traumatised when discovering my future mother-in-law's culinary....ahem....'skills' !! since I was unaware that I recall that 'experience' regularly
