As I have said many times already - They were just EXAMPLES. The players who came to my head first. List the top 5 players who you think would cost the most in today's market from the history of BFC

Glavin, Redfearn, Ward, Hammill plus one other so I don't have to exclude someone.
Glavin, sheer class, the best of the best for us. Consolidated us in Div 3, took us to Div 2 and nearly to Div 1.
Redfearn, took us to Div 1 and almost helped us stay there
Ward, much as I loved Trevor Aylott from my favourite ever team Ashley is the best centre forward we've had in my time.
Hammill, dynamite in his first spell. In his second helped us out of Div 3 and was a big part of us winning our first cup in 104 years.
As for No. 5. De Zeeuw, Hignett, Taylor, Blanchflower wouldn't like to choose.

P.s Honourable mention to Conor who goes into contention for the number 5 slot.

    Re: What about

No criticism intended, I was merely pointing out a couple of players who either by reputation or from my own personal witness were better than the ones in your list. I completely agree with the others though.

Having said all that, I would probably include Paul Furtcher in my top 5.

    Glavin, Hignett, Redders, Futcher, McCarthy.

Honourable mentions: Banks, Ward, Hourihane, Geddes.

Stones would be in there if he'd been with us longer.

I don't think I could give an honest answer to that question, as I never saw players such as Ernest Hine, George Lillycrop, Harry Tufnell, Wilf Bartrop, George Utley, Tubby Ashton, Johnny Steele, Pat Kelly, Gordon Pallister, Gavin Smith, Danny Blanchflower, Jimmy Baxter, Eddie McMorran, Cec McCormack, George Robledo, Johnny Kelly, Tommy Taylor, Skinner Normanton, Arthur Kaye, Lol Chappell, Bobby Wood, Duncan Sharp, George Kerr and many, many more playing for Barnsley.

Taylor went for 29,999 which was a record at the time. If he would've been playing now I think Barnsley would've got £30m from Man Utd with his talent. We wouldn't have got say 100m for him no chance. No matter how good the player is only the top Champuons League teams get that much for their players. Aka the Champions Greed.

Was it Taylor that they gave a quid to the tea lady so as not to saddle him with the £30k fee?
Or have I made that up?

Yes it's impossible to do it on anything other than the players you've seen and that skews it. Also time plays tricks on us. David Speedie for example was nothing more than a talented young lad for us and not a player in his prime but finds his way onto this page and personal favourites certain impact the way we think.

I thought you'd been to the 1912 FA Cup final anyhoo...

Yeah, but I'm only five feet tall, so I couldn't see over the heads of all the people wearing top hats.
    I'm a rubbish liar.

Matt Busby handed the pound note over.

If anyone's interested in Taylor there's a really good book in the local studies section in the Town Hall. It came out 10 or more years ago and goes into a lot of detail about his life.
