Thanks everyone for your kind words. The love we have received is amazing. I didn’t post to create a long thread and create lots more sympathy, you’ve all done that in spades already, for which I am eternally grateful. I just wanted to let people know, who have been asking. I was the luckiest boy alive. I had a kick about with Peter Beardsley outside the changing rooms, met Graham Taylor when he was England Manager, met Brian Clough loads of times, went to Allan Clarke’s house and cradled his Golden boot, played snooker on Norman Hunters 12 foot snooker table and spent countless hours with Rimmo talking about cricket. I’d give every single one of them up for one last pint with my Dad. I was privileged in lots of ways, but we were brought up like 2 lads from Barnsley. Thanks again everyone but remember that every good Dad is a legend. x
I may have shared this before but when we played at Bootham Crescent in a friendly (99?) it was a rare occasion when I went to a match with my dad, maybe the last one we went to together (I have always gone with my mum but for some reason my dad came that day, probably fancied a day in York). Anyway, as we arrived at the ground I pointed to a man coming round the corner and said that's Eric Winstanly, dad. My dad shouted over 'Eric!' and a beaming smile, a wave and an 'alreight' was returned (obviously he had no idea who were, apart from Barnsley fans). That moment always stuck with me; a rare Barnsley game with my dad and the returned friendliness of a man who was one of my heroes. I was 10 years old when we reached the Premier League. That season will forever stay in my heart as the highlight of my childhood, one that brought everyone together families, the players, the fans and the town: a beautiful connection and an incredible achievement in the name of our club. Your dad was a huge part of that, a friendly giant who gave his all for Barnsley. He's someone I'll never forget. My thoughts are with you and all your family mate. Stay strong and remember the good times.
