    I live in Headingley.

Leeds hate us, as we usually do them over.

I like Leeds, good pubs, great shopping, easy to get to. However when it comes to Yorkshire thing they are a bit like Wayward Pines and act as if there are no other places in Yorkshire. Regarding football, aren't all teams rivals with each other?

I had a big argument with a Leeds fan that I know.
He couldn't understand why I preferred Man United to Leeds.
He kept saying 'but Leeds is a Yorkshire club'.
I explained it as this - Man United impact is felt all over the country - where ever you go there are Man United fans.
That's not the case with Leeds who have a big following that are born and bred Barnsley folk.
So teams that pull support away from our own town are our biggest rivals.
    That's Sheffield and Leeds

Leeds is a pretty good city to live in. (I've lived there 26 years).
I live in Headingley though & Headingley is really like its own town,
Apart from DJ work in clubs / venues in town i rarely leave Headingley.
Headingley is pretty much a melting pot because of the Uni, so you can
wander round wearing a Man Utd shirt & not get your head kicked in. (You
    would in most other suburbs..)

Many of my mates support Leeds & non of them underestimate us.
Loads of Leeds fans hate us, cause we nearly always beat them.
They all hate Man Utd, but Man Utd only have hatred for Liverpool.

I don't hate Leeds or Sheffield as cities - we are lucky in Barnsley to have such great cities just north and south of us.
I just hope their football clubs go out of business or drop into the conference league - not because of their fans that come from those cities - but because of their fans that come from Barnsley

I have never hated our Yorkshire rivals, although Sheff Utd have pushed that to the limit... I love us to beat them though & like as many derbies in a season as possible, so like them to be in the same division as us. Would rather us be playing Sheff Utd in Championship next season that Millwall, but that's my own personal take. Supporting BFC is why we are on here.

Although geographcally positioned within the West Riding we were not classed as the West Riding. We were a county borough and as such stood on our own. Areas like Cudworth and Royston where however classed as West Riding.

That was because of councill politics etc .
Geographically from eons ago Yorkshire was split into thirds (ridings) North Riding, East Riding and West Riding ,

Ridings is an old English word for thirds.
What is now South Yorkshire was in the West Third.

Re: so why did we come under the W.R.C.C then

    Yes that's true.
But that was a councill administration policy.
The fact councill and govt messed with technicalities for whatever reason doesn't take away the fact that when king whoever split Yorkshire into thirds he didn't bother about councillors fartinh abart.

king 'Whoever@ was in fact a VIKING

I was born and bread in Hoyland .. the word HOY is Viking for High... Elsecar was a Viking settlement , there was a Viking Lord cald Else... not sure what the Car bit is... lots of things in our area are so totally Norse Ley, scoe, and other such stuff on the end of place names are Norse..

Lots of slang words are also old Norse.eg laikin , Wahtta etc.also Dale is old Norse and many of our good old Yorkshire surnames like Scargill.
