Many on here scoffed when Val made his “emergence of Victor” comment, but I think this just shows what faith from a manager can do
It's clear VI and GS have very different managerial styles and ways of talking to players. I always felt Struber was battering the forwards and contributed to our lack of goals. VI has said, we have what we have, lets work with it. I think Victor has a long way to go, but I'd certainly be happy to offer him a 2 year deal with a +1 option. It wouldn't be expensive and he'd be my second pick of all the forwards we have at present.
According to this, we've got an option for another year: https://www.barnsleyfc.co.uk/news/2...rees new contract until,in favour of the club.
I'll go against the tide a bit and say that I am not sure he is Championship standard. For me he stands out because of the physical attributes he has, which we've been missing with Woodrow/Chaplin up front, but I'd still like us to bring in a player with the same kind of attributes but more quality, if we can afford that.
I'm so glad the club stuck with this lad....he might have been released under previous regimes. You can see how hard he's grafted for his chance.
That's fair enough, but I'd say he has more potential to become a championship standard forward than anybody we would likely sign to replace him. The 5 subs rule will help him develop this season.
I was far from convinced that Kieffer was championship quality but he’s more than proved himself. Same with Ivan Toney. Vic’s not the finished article yet but he’s shown more than enough to say that he will get there. Ok his first touch can be heavy but then again so was Bruce Dyer’s
I thought he did brilliantly when he came on. He took his goal well and I thought his touch had improved. I think Woodrow looks happier with him alongside.
I don't think any defender is going to be thinking "Oh great Victor's coming on" he had that Centre Half in his palm, and as you say the more he plays the better his awareness and touch are.
I can't believe he's had so long in the wilderness. He had a run under Stendel in 2018 and then went off the radar completely. I look at last season an think maybe he'd have made an impact then as well if he'd been given a chance. I'd offer him an improved contract.
Agreed. Vic is transformed in the last few weeks, I didn't know he had it in him. So happy to have been proved wrong
Their centre half was heavily reliant on the referee's whistle to get him out of trouble when he wasn't strong enough to deal with Victor.
I liked it when Victor was pulling the defenders shirt but made it look the other way round and won us that free kick that killed valuable seconds near the end.
I believe he has yes. Out on loan under Stendel & Struber, can't recall him playing that much in L1/L2 either. Valerien has given him a new lease of life, given him confidence. He would now run through a brick wall for the team
He has only started a handful of games so far but come on as sub quite a lot and managed 6 goals. I think when he first appeared he cropped up in the right place to score but looked a bit lost in his general game and didn't know how or when to get involved. If someone has ability and attitude, time will allow it to be found. What I'm most delighted about is that it was his first Championship goal at Oakwell. And it was the winner. That will be huge for the lad. I can't imagine how much he'll smile just remembering that moment.
Just been posted on the club's official Twitter page. https://twitter.com/BarnsleyFC?ref_src=twsrc^google|twcamp^serp|twgr^author
Said it before on here after the Derby game, but Victor has every attribute you want from a footballer that can't be trained. He's lacking in some areas, but everything he's lacking in can be improved on with time. He seems to have a great attitude, too, so I'd back him to do so.
