Yep. Publicity seeking low life, trying to justify what he did by saying it was only for his Dad, there were lots of empty seats, not fair that we couldn't go to see our team play. Yeah, ok "Pablo".
Too easy to get information out to a whole crowd on instant messaging nowadays. I guess that someone knew the weak point at Wembley to be the access for supporters with disabilities, got the information out on social media and suddenly there is a whole crowd at that point too great for the stewarding there. I have no doubt that Wembley staff will have learned from this and will plug the gaps, so that it will be harder to do again, but it is shameful that it has happened and I fear that it may be the first of a great deal of lawlessness which follows the end of lockdown, as people seem to believe that the UK culture is one rule for the privileged and we're all going to behave like the privileged and do what we want. I do hope that I am wrong about this, but Wembley just gives me a concern about what 'freedom' means to different groups of folks.
Wolves too, under Mick McCarthy when they were closing in on promotion. Around 2010ish? The North stand was certainly over crowded. I'd read a few on their forum bragging about getting in without a ticket. There was a video posted a while ago of a few Barnsley fans giving a Middlesbrough fan a leg up over the wall into Oakwell, so I think it can be done with relative ease.
Not condoning what happened by any stretch but people acting like this is only an English thing. It happens all over. During the World Cup in Brazil a load of Chile fans got into their game against Spain by storming through the media area.
Agree with all of that and I was thinking that it must have been terrifying for any wheelchair-bound people in that area surrounded by the rampaging mob. It’s going to happen more and more I think.
Luzhniki in Moscow springs to mind - first ticket check on the edge of a park which you then have to walk through. Great stadium. Amazing redevelopment job while preserving the original structure.
Agreed. All the stadiums in Russia were completely off-limits unless you were accredited or had tickets. The only thing remotely similar to Sundays events was in Brazil, where some of the stadiums were a bit more lax on the security front, but nothing on the scale of Wembley.
The irony of this whole situation is that the hooligans are all folk who refuse to wear face coverings. Even though there is face ID CCTV all over London and they would normally cover their faces to do this kind of stuff, they refused and went around committing crime with their faces fully on display. There'll be a fair few arrests over the coming weeks I reckon.
The Wembley stewarding has always been awful. Let's not forget that they let hundreds of thugs from Millwall run around the stadium unchecked and it took an absolute age for police to turn up
He deserved a £10,000 bonus for that match. He was let down by the decision makers though and by his fellow stewards who stood back and let them get to him in the first place
Why is the chaos at Wembley on Sunday a surprise to any Reds fans, it's the same stewards who managed to allow dozens of Millwall fans to travel the entire length of the stadium concourse to perform a pincer movement on an isolated group of reds fans on the top tier and attack them.
Tickets changing hands for thousands, reduced capacity, so this was inevitable. Poor security and policing were the problems. Mind you it doesn't help seeing celebs on freebies in every shot of the crowd. That will only fuel resentment and increase those trying to get in for free. Our society is increasingly divided and some of those who can't afford the luxuries of a materialistic country will always break the law.
See the Met is having an argument with Wembley about who is ultimately responsible for security on Wembley Way. Surely for a game on this scale with a billion people watching it becomes a police issue - even an army one if manpower is lacking.
Sy Police cover the main road to Oakwell from the train station so surely it must be the Mets jurisdiction?
