I'm saying I don't think Oxford will double their record transfer fee (which I believe is what it will take) to sign Kane, after a season in which his performances have been commended but in which they haven't finished as highly as the previous two seasons. He's reportedly done well there, but their supporters are no doubt disappointed that they have failed to reach the play offs, despite how well Kane has played.

 

Surely we wouldn't extend the loan to a potential play-off/promotion/top half (who knows how next season will go!) rival, and strengthen them and weaken ourselves? Particularly as we will likely be without Styles next season, besides Bassi, Gomes etc.

 

Time will tell. I just don't think we will accept less than a million for him, and I don't think Oxford will be prepared to pay that. In terms of him not wanting to come back, I take your point. But he's under contract and surely guaranteed to be a regular mainstay in our midfield next season, should be welcomed back with open arms. I don't think Kane was mistreated by us by the way. Every time he made a cameo under Val he fell short for me, he looked unconvincing and frankly a waste of money. Now he has apparently proven himself in League 1 and that's now our level, so.. welcome back to Grove Street Herbie, show us what you're made of. Don't forget these players earn a lot of money, we shouldn't pity the poor bairns too much. They are, after all, professionals. And privileged ones at that.

It's difficult to judge players in what is not just a failing team, but a failing club. Given some stability and a half decent coach I think we might be surprised what some of the players now being written off can actually do. It wasn't just Alex M who was written off early by fans in the past, but also Neil Redfern when he first arrived on a permanent deal.

 

It's really not difficult to judge though is it? Can you really think that players on 6/7/8 grand a week like Leya Iseka, Cole, Obbi, Benson, Schmidt are going to suddenly come good playing Wednesday instead of Reading? Or that the stability you mention will actually be provided by the arsewipe ownership?

And quite rightly, we need the money.

As you said, he never pulled up any trees for us so he's definitely not a million pound player.

 

Let us assume that the owners want Barnsley to break even next season because all the reserves of cash are gone. You are the CEO who is charged with achieving this. We do not have the accounts for this season, so I have included summarised figures for the 2020/21 season. In brackets after the Barnsley figures, are the figures for Peterborough United, who in the 2020/21 season, were in League 1, and therefore are a good comparison for what we can expect next season.

Our pay cost for 2020/21 season are £7.4m more than those of Peterborough. Indeed, they are more than double. Peterborough player sales were higher than those of Barnsley. We know that there is no alternative to selling players, so let us assume we make £4.8m from that exercise (profit on players sales is the transfer fee received, less any remaining balance of the fee that we paid). Let us further assume that the difference in overheads is represented by the difference in player transfer fee amortisation, and that our overheads naturally fall to £6.2m following the sale of players. However Peterborough lost £1m in the year, and we must therefore add that to the £7.4m we need to save in wage costs if we are to break even. So what happens if it has no cash, the owners do not increase their funding, and it does not break even. Well, these figures are no predictor of cash flow, but transfer fees do not usually arrive in a single installment. The club must repay the second 50% of the EFL loan, and it is therefore a logical assumption that it will run out of cash. I believe the opening poster is correct. We are in a mess

 

You don't sound like a dick mate, it's all about opinions. I think Conman will want to recoup as much as he can (I think we paid around a million?), and I don't think Oxford will cough up the cash. That's it really. Maybe we will want 750k and another club will stump up the money without a second thought. I think if we sell him, we need to replace him. And it's easier to keep him. That's it really, my thoughts. We will make money off Styles, Morris, Helik, Collins, no doubt; I think we should look to keep Kane. But to be honest nothing surprises me with these owners. Maybe, as @Redhelen suggests, we'll do something really dumb and loan him out for another year. Stranger things have happened down Grove Street, that's for sure.

 

I keep saying to people that the club will run out of money this season and will apply for Administration. Unless a combination of Player sales,losses covered by the Hong Kong owners and increased income from ticket sales and sponsorship, plus lower operating costs.
