In a normal world it seems a lot of money. In the current climate a young player spending 4 months on loan at a championship club & winning player of the season followed by scoring 24 goals in his first full championship season for a mid-table side is worth every bit of £20m. He’s continually improved, every time he’s got a chance he’s took it, he’s a great finisher, has a great touch, he finds space, he can dribble, he can play on his own, with a partner or even on the wing. Even if he doesn’t do well in the prem proven championship strikers can go for £15m like Assombolonga went for so it’s not like they’ll not recoup most if not all of that fee.
How could we not have we not afforded him? Our owners are reportedly worth billions. Surely that's exactly the same as Barnsley Football Club having money to burn.
If that’s aimed at me then you need to read EXACTLY what I said in this thread - and stop following the herd.
Sorry to have to inform you, but this is probably your destiny in life - FOLLOWING where others lead.
I know nudger I should break the mould and immerse myself in your boundless wisdom. I know you're dead intelligent because you keep telling us all that you are. I'll try harder. Now tell me again how Ollie McBurnie was EVER going to sign for us.
I’m really pleased to hear that you are going to study what I say more often and more carefully. What we can do now is start with this particular thread - I want you to read my posts within this thread - and then I want you to copy and paste any sentence where I say that we should have signed mMcBurnie either now or when we were relegated. If you can’t find it then I will understand. I will give you another test sometime later. In the meantime have a go at trying to think for yourself.
Lol, so you didn't say that you hoped the club would have signed him? That wasn't you? Again nudger do quit with the patronising arrogance. You really lack the wherewithal to back it up.
NO - I didn’t say that. I said this ....... ....... Unfortunately we were relegated when he was here. But if we had stayed up - would the club have paid 4 or 5 million for him? Second lesson for you ........ get to know what a ‘question’ is. Third lesson for you ........ understand what it says - and NOT what you think it says. However ........ I’ll say this, although I haven’t said it in this thread ..... I do actually believe that if Barnsley is to be successful then at some point ALONG THE WAY the directors will probably have to pay £4 or £5 million, or whatever it takes, to bring in the level of quality in like McBurnie.
Oh and BTW Churtonred - while you are carefully studying my posts - then it would be good if you could invite Gally to sit around the desk with you
You said "so I would have hoped that the owners would have signed him" Nudger you're a total simpleton but you think you're a genius. However, you're not worth getting banned for so I'll say nighty night.
I don't see it happening any time soon. Do I think we'll break our transfer record at some point in the near future? Possibly. Moving onto a higher level signing players for 4 or 5 million quid, is a big leap from where we are now. Players in that bracket want the wages to match, and I don't think you can employ a player like that in isolation, the whole wage structure would have to be re jigged in order to keep the rest of the players sweet.
Yes ..... but I said we were relegated!!! Do I really need to spell it out FFS !!! Cos it looks like I need to. The post isn’t really about McBurnie - what I’m trying to do here is prompt a debate about the change in strategy of the club during the Patrick era compared to what it is right now with regard to bringing in young LOAN PLAYERS. These are young loan players that cannot be brought in on permanent deals AT THAT TIME - but might be secured at a later date. There have been quite a number of young loanees through the door at Oakwell in recent years that could have eventually been secured which would have generated a vast amount of money for the club. Drinkwater (£1 million) springs to mind but there have been others such as Pearson etc etc.
So you wanted us to bring them in then sell them on at a profit? You don't like that do you? The players we loaned were out of our price bracket but club knew we would develop them. Possibly we were doing them a favour - yes we were but again that's why they came I'm lost as to what your point is now as it started off with just a simple statement about Mcburnie. To me it was they have priced him at 20 we got 2-3 for Pinnock. It's now gone off at more tangents than I care to recal
He's spent the past year and more going on about how we should've signed McBurnie despite countless threads telling him he wouldn't have gone to a third tier team and his wages are likely to be more than twice our highest player is paid. He's now backtracking and criticising the club, saying we should've signed him had we stayed up, which is laughable as it is purely hypothetical. Wage demands would still have been out of our reach. What is the point about doing this to death? It is totally irrelevant. We didn't stay up. The new owners have been rumoured by ITK posters over past couple of weeks to be looking at players that may break our record - however........we STILL need to spend within our FOOOOOOKIN means.
