this thread is bonkers. Do you really think penalty takers are not planned out in advance as soon as we get passed the group stage? They practice repeatedly. And Southgate picks the takers based on the practice. Do people think Southgate asks for volunteers in the huddle seconds before the shoot out starts? The lineup and who is taking them is agree before hand. No one sat by and let a kid take one. Sako more than likely knocked them out the park throughout hence he took number 5. If Stirling has a spotty penalty record and was poor in training then why would Southgate have him in the lineup?
and this whole thing about penalties being a lottery is a farce. If it were a lottery our number wouldve cone up by now. Some teams are good at them, some players are good at them. Italy until recently have been crap at Pens too. Germany are good at them.
