It’s a damning indictment on our society where we would rather spend lots more on hurting our fellow man than caring for them .
Absolutely. Being out of the EU is universally agreed to being worse than being independent. So an independent Scotland remaining within the EU is hopefully the way we will go.
Thanks, you make a statement about my hatred towards immigrants ( which I certainly have not made) and I ask you to show me and you dont, brilliant. Then you mention my hatred for the Scottish which again I never put across any hatred for the Scots, but I ask again please if you are going to accuse me of such, then back yourself up, again I'll wait
But if Scotland votes for Independence AFTER the UK has left the EU then Scotland has to apply for membership of the EU. This is a risky strategy as in the interim (years?) Scotland will be attached to neither the EU nor the rest of the UK.
Which is why Nicola has spent a huge amount of time in Europe talking to EU leaders over this exact situation. And from what I have heard those talks have went better than expected. Even Spain has suggested they would have no problems with an independent Scotland re-joining the EU. I'm sure all these problems have and are being attended to.
thanks Ian - it is still a risky situation and I wonder when push comes to shove how the good folk of Scotland will vote on Independence if as seems likely the UK has left the EU. It would only take one member country to block their joining the EU.
Absolutely. But life is not without risks. And one huge risk is UK leaving the EU and to go it alone. I did read somewhere that Scotland's gdp was bigger than those of the baltic States and others. Add to this Scotland's oil and gas reserves along with our booming renewable energy industries, fishing, whisky I'd say we had more than enough to offer should we be in a position to rejoin the EU.
If the UK leaves the EU, us moving to Scotland isn't out of the question and I'd gladly be assisting an independence vote to then join the EU.
I've never quite understood why if Scotland is such a millstone as many right wing journos and parts of Westminster would have us perceive.... why its not pushed for separation from the Union side, rather than denying Scotland over and over. Curious.
Wow, we are gonna need that trade deal with the US now, for the Dons wall building experience. Remember a school trip up to Hadrians wall, all that way to look at summat less impressive than the local farmers dry stone wall. Gonna need some serious TLC if it is going to form the hard border if Scotland declare independence and we leave the EU on no deal scenario.. On a serious note Arabian Ian... When you had the indy ref last time, I seem to remember all the scenarios pointing to a poorer Scotland outside of the UK and this was before our EU ref.. So always baffles me when the SNP go on the offensive about why would we vote to be poorer, yet the same applies to leaving the UK... Was that the case, ie all these experts predicting that?
If the UK leaves the EU, Scotland would be bonkers to stay in the UK. If the UK stays in the EU Scotland would be bonkers to stay in the UK. What ‘s difficult to understand about that. It’s a very different Country to England and the West of England (Wales when there’s a rugby match on!) and has an increasingly different set of values and aspirations and see’s it’s role in the world as being very different to England. Of course Scotland should leave the UK. And who knows, it might even force the people of Northern England to get of their knees (doffing their cloth caps as they did so) and demanding proper control over their lives rather than being under the whim of Westminster/Whitehall.
All that will happen with devolution is the better ran councils or boroughs would receive less money year on year. You're managing well fend for yourself whilst the rest of the country splurge.
I fear your cap may be doffing! You are presenting your own version of devolution which is fine - we're all entitled to an opinion - but there are many others. Goodness, if English people could see over the White Cliffs they might even see that other Countries have adopted more democratic, well run balanced systems of Govt underpinned by 'proper' devolution.
That's a shame you encountered this in Scotland. Must've been the minority which every town in Britain have unfortunately. I've been to Scotland a few times through work and not experienced anything but pleasant folk. I don't agree with the SNP though in any way. I've been to 3 football matches in Scotland, Celtic twice and St Mirren. Even on those occasions where you'd think you'd bump into the crowd of numpties, everyone was sound. It's a cracking scenic drive in places too.
Well all opinions are that leaving the EU and remaining within the UK would be the worst scenario. Poorer by far. And I for one believe not a jot what the tories say on this matter. They have a history of lying through their teeth. I'm quite confident that an independent Scotland is achievable and has a good chance of success. Of course I could be badly wrong but what I see under a tory govt is worse. Imo.
