ehhh we used to dream of attendances of 3000, we used to have one man and his dog , one in each half of the ground! Seriously though the sixties were ‘different times’! Also went to a few central league games, God knows what those attendances were!
Workington game sounds about right....not quite sure but think it was single figures over 1200 and yes I was there lol
Workington rings a bell for me. If I dig out old programmes from the time I may be able to confirm...
West Brom mad Friday last season 0-0 freezing fog crowd announced counting season ticket holders but about 2500 at most in ground awful
Pretty sure I would have been there as I was going to every home game by the time we went down to the 4th division in the early 70's and I remember watching Workington a few times but I dont specifically remember such a low attendance
Haven't a clue but some sub 2000. Don't think any 1st team games were sub 1000. 1965-present day.. maybe county cup. Where we'd often play a strong side. Re the reserves. quite a few watched during the Mel Machin era. A good second string served up some good football. But none to match this lol. Some reports suggest that the lowest ever attendance in the Football League came when a meagre 13 people watched Stockport v Leicester City on 7 May 1921 in a Division Two game. Indeed, only 13 people officially paid to watch the game, which was played at Old Trafford because Stockport's ground was closed.
In terms of the first team, 3659 on Sat 8th October 1994 v Southend United,.in what is now the Championship. It was the third successive home game where we dipped below a 4000 gate. Home supporters all in the East Stand at that time of the season due to the enforced closure of the remaining terracing in line with the Taylor report. Although it was a strange old time, and the club wasn't awash with cash, we were just starting to get going as a decent side under the first few weeks of Danny Wilson's management. As the season progressed, the issues with the ground arguably deepened the resolve of both the supporters and the club itself, a bit of Dunkirk spirit and two-fingers to the authorities, it turned out to be one of our best ever seasons.
There was a revamped Anglo Italian cup game that seemed to have about 1000 fans but can’t remember exact figures
Just checked Anglo Italian Cup v Grimsby 1627 on 14/09/93 Gotta be smallest oakwell crowd in living memory. I was living in London at the time and travelled up to see it (amazing I ever had sex in the 90s to be fair).
Probably Wimbledon game at the end of the 85 season - photos of the half empty Ponty looked grim in the papers
I was there for a match against Derby, in the ridiculous Anglo Italian cup competition, in season '92. There weren't many there, and what I remember the most about it is the minutes silence we had before kick off. Some of our fans had died in a motorway accident recently, on the way to Bristol City.
I think I remember one in the sixties with 1200 and some. Remember sitting on the kop on the concrete watching it. Can’t be specific, maybe it wasn’t real.
me and my mates a couple of years before promised that if they ever revived the Anglo Italian we would go so we could brag about watching Barnsley ‘in Europe’. Not our greatest idea though I’m sure Banger scored a hatrick in a 5-3 thriller
Wasn't that the Zenith/Full members cup at West Brom, where we won 3-5. Although I suppose the West Midlands is still classed as Europe isn't it.
Yeah it was in season '90, and Ian Banks might have scored a hat trick, I can't quite remember. But there was also a fox that ran onto the pitch a few times, and it made us think f*k off Basil Brush.
