Years ago when I worked for the tracky we got an Indian guy in the driving school who's English wasn't the best ( bless him ) ... He was instructed on numerous occasions to follow the Barugh Green sign on every occasion we drove past it no matter which direction we came from ... Having to do the loop to get back on track ...after his 4th or 6th failure to follow instructions Ken the driving instructor lost his rag and shouted follow the ******* sign that says Barugh Green... look B.A.R.U.G.H G.R.E.E.N ( bark green)it's that ******* simple...the Indian guy stops the bus and says ...I'm sorry sir i dont want to argue but you need to go back to school Bark is spelt B.A.R.K......not barugh....that sign post says...
    BAR,..RU. Green....

Same guy shown sign for hump back bridge says humpty back bridge ...then shown uneven road sign and replied humpty humpty back bridge...
I kid you not ...happy days lol

Imagine having to actually learn the language then! Not just at night school for a bit of fun but a having to learn the whole thing, just so you can live like a normal human being.

I always wondered, is this actually Russian, or is Cleesey just making it up. If it's real, what's he saying?

Try learning Chinese. The cyrillic alphabet is fairly quickly learnable...Chinese characters take about two years full time study - some of them are understandable. For example the characters for China are 中国 which can be romanized using the Pin Yin method as Zhōngguó Ihigh tone followed by rising tone. The characters are an ideogram followed by a pictogram. The name for China means "Middle Kingdom" so 中 is an ideogram for "middle" as you can see, and 国 used to be a picture of a King inside a field - hence Kingdom, but has become stylized and simplified. Easy really...

And they share a lot of them. The old classical characters can be read by both Japanese and Chinese scholars.

He is indeed speaking Russian. Further investigation suggests that it's a poem by Mikhail Lermontov entitled The Prayer. This is a translation I found online, although to be honest it sounds much better in Russian. What is interesting is that although Cleese can't speak Russian at all, his pronunciation is much better than most English people who've lived here for years!

    When my life is arduous
    It sadness freezes blood,
    I say one prayer marvelous,
I learned it all by heart.

    There's vigor unbelievable
    In living words' accords,
    And breathes unfamiliar
    And holly charm in words.

    A heart becomes not troublesome,
    And doubts go awry,
And comes the truth and tears come,
    And soul wants to fly.
