Leeds city varieties, it’s on YouTube and is absolutely fantastic. Chumbawamba were an incredible band, the full electric version especially. anyone who trots out the garbage about tub thumping is just being lazy imo,
Haven’t listened to Rock On since... Actually I may have never properly listened to it before. I didn't know about the REM influence but straight away I thought 'This is Drive by REM'. Or, more accurately, REM have nicked this and called it Drive.
Thanks for the Drive heads up. I'd never heard that David Essex song before, but there's a very obvious resemblance!
I love all of those other bands. Mike Watt is a bit of a hero of mine. Looks like listening again to the first five REM albums is going to be my April project. I'll keep you all updated!
I'm going to have another shot - I suspect this one will be less controversial! I still really like this song, but after listening to the rest of their material I've got absolutely no idea how they magicked it up. Bit of a Madness vibe in the video.
Bloody love The Coral - so it's boo-urns from me. How about this? A slightly different angle, going to the manufactured route. But whoever wrote this deserves a medal - pure pop perfection.
Don't dismiss the next ten either! Even their later post-Berry stuff contains some magical moments, even if it wasn't quite as consistent as what came before.
