There was a massive hole in Kendray street when I walked past a few days ago - clearly visible from temporary bridge. The plan for Midland Street is below for anyone interested. Full documents available on the council planning portal at: https://wwwapplications.barnsley.go...planningApplicationNumber=2021/0131#documents Also some good 3D views of the development (including Midland Street) are available at: https://www.henrybootconstruction.co.uk/news/taking-a-look-at-the-glass-works-3d-model
Will there be pedestrian access round the back of the scheme to Lambra Road when it's done, or will we still have to walk up New Street and round the Alhambra Centre when the AC doors are closed?
There’s access from Lambra Road - pretty much where the entrance to the old meat and fish market used to be on that side. The new arcade won’t have doors on it so can’t be closed on an evening. Here’s a picture of that entrance ‘borrowed’ from the Barnsley & Surrounding Districts Facebook Page.
That turning circle absolutely ruins it in my opinion. Also a bit confused because the reason the bridge had to have steps and an expensive lift was because there wasn't room to continue the ramp down apparently but in that 3d model the bridge is hidden away ending right at the back of the cinema with people then having to walk along a dingy windowless building. I can't see anything stopping the bridge from continuing and ending much nearer the front of the cinema
I’m no structural engineer so can’t really comment. However, I’d assume cost is the biggest reason. Extending the bridge that far up would double the length of the bridge deck - and there’s enough uproar at the £5 million price tag as it is. Keeping the ramp 5m wide would impede on the amount of space on Kendray Street too - remember Kendray Street still needed vehicular access (for service vehicles) when the bridge was designed so they never had the room when consulting with the experts on the bridge requirements and design. I do recall the council saying they just didn’t have the space for ramps, and even if they did on the Interchange side, the height difference meant that the opposite end couldn’t accommodate ramps that would be aesthetically pleasing. The changes to Midland Street have come about long after the bridge designs were approved, and I wouldn’t be surprised if the order for the deck and supports is already in so can’t be changed. I still think the amount of pedestrian space in and around the bridge is plentiful, and I also don’t expect that turning circle to be permanently occupied - I’d imagine private vehicles will be banned from using it. I do agree that it’s a shame the steps on the Interchange side can’t be repositioned to face towards the pedestrianised space now that Midland Street is being altered, but it’s probably just too late. I still think it’ll be a major improvement on the level crossing!
If Yorkshire Water work at the same pace as they did the repairs to the burst main at Sheffield Road/Cemetery Road recently, we'll be lucky to see a bridge this decade.
