    In 1972 and 1974, my dad went out with a shopping bag and a screwdriver on an old abandoned railway line looking for pieces of coal. There was no question in his mind about how he'd manage, he had solidarity with the rest of the miners. We coped.

    This came out in the 80's. About the end of the end of the miners' strike. It wasn't about UK stuff, but US foreign policy. The UK unions are fighting a similar fascist beast in the most right wing government in post war times. I support them.

    In my experience most strike ballots are instigated by members not Union leaders .

    With respect Tekky. I must have mentioned this a hundred times on the BBS. Go and read the union bible. 'The ragged trousered philanthropist'
    We have similar issues 100+ yrs later. And maybe you'll understand why the union movement evolved. And stand up for the working and indeed middle classes.
    Taking strike action is always a last resort. But becomes necessary when needed. This government have made it so hard to take industrial action and take the piss as and when to get round the table. A fortnight's notice has to be given, in some cases they will offer talks the day before a strike. Trying to make it look bad for the unions if they refuse. if they do enter talks and call it off, the clock is reset so to speak.
