Human rights are derived from the European convention on Human rights on which we are still a member and nothing to do with the EU. As someone has already said, if they tried that with the French, they'd blockade the port.
The bigger picture might also be that a non-British company took British taxpayers money during the pandemic and then sacks specifically, its British workers, afterwards, some observations: Global capitalism leads to our country being dependent on non-British companies to supply goods here because we are an island and we are therefore beholden to money makers and decision makers not subject to, or with any reference about, British law, workers or society. We continue to see that risk is nationalised and profits are privatised. How much longer are people going to sit back and take this? EDF can only raise their prices by 5% in France, here? Do whatever you like - can't upset the market can we?
Discussing the decision to lay off workers, the company said: "We have made a £100m loss year-on-year, which has been covered by our parent DP World. This is not sustainable. Without these changes there is no future for P&O Ferries." And after pulling stunts like this one there certainly shouldn't be a future for P&O Ferries/P&O full stop! If they are allowed to get away with this it will be a green light for any company big or small to do the same. Whilst I am not quite as cynical on some on here, (I think the omission of relevant employment protection clauses enshrined in the EU legislation during the change to UK law after Brexit, and the potential for it to result in this kind of abuse and exploitation of employees by a ruthless company was more down to Govt incompetence than malicious intent). That though is a moot point This will only be a valid PoV if the Government follow through with the threat of punitive measures against this rogue company (one whose parent company made 2bn profit!!) and also follow up with legislation to close the loophole so it can never happen again. Much as I would like to think they will , I won't hold my breath.
I recall a post I made last week which was basically; This is precisely what you voted for! If you voted for Brexit and / or voted Tory then you did so because you wanted to see british workers rights weakened*, in exactly the same way as you voted to not let in refugees. Pretending to be upset by it once it's happened is pathetic. And if you are actually upset by it; Why? they've done precisely what they said they would. *There are people in the British cabinet who literally wrote books saying how british workers were overpaid and lazy, and others supporting privatisation of the NHS. JRM's dad literally wrote the blueprint for a society where workers are treated as commodities whilst the rich get richer. But - free broadband? pie in the sky politics eh.
This has gone quiet on the news. So have we accepted it? Can’t help recalling Farage’s comment after the Brexit vote about “Turkey’s voting for Christmas.”
P&O admit that they knew they were breaking the law but chose to do so anyway. They should have their operators license revoked and be banned from operating in the UK.
