See that's the problem, the business doesn't depend on it. If we were filling the ground week in week out i'd agree with you.
The business doesn't depend on it tho if we're getting crowds to fill it every week then it makes sense but at the moment it doesnt
It may not matter to you - but if the business or part of the business didn’t depend on it - why are these owners banging on about improving the supporters experience. Why should they bother ?
It's about doing things that are viable such as creating a fan zone etc.... knocking a stand down and building a new one isn't something they appear to be planning to do in the short term and I would imagine the majority of fans would appreciate that.
£9 million to build apparently. I think our East Stand cost something between £2 and £3 million back in 1992
The article seems to base a lot if it on atmosphere generated by supporters than the actual ground. Yes Leeds get great support and create a good atmosphere. But that ground is horrendous. Should be near the bottom. Hard to judge Oakwell without bias but most away fans seem to think it's a decent ground. Also, the west stand is a thing of beauty.
In order simply: Improve spectator experience Leads to increased numbers of spectators Leads to increased need for more seating Leads to a business case for a new west stand It’s not even complicated The alternative ‘if you build it they will come’ is a bit of a gamble.
Very surprised to see Wigan as low as 22nd. I think it's a smashing little ground. Mind, last time I went there, we filled the stand, turned them over, generated a fantastic atmosphere, and secured our play off place. So I might have had the old rose tinted spectacles on that day. But still harsh to rank it so low.
It affects the whole acoustics of the stadium, with the low roof and the open corners the atmosphere is lost. All the new stadiums are designed with acoustics in mind, Tottenham's is absolutely deafening, even the NY stadium sounds like there's more than 10k in it. Another decent crowd on Saturday expected with probably less than 2k home seats left, if the club are serious about consolidating in the Championship they'll need to soon start thinking about the West Stand if half of it is going to remain shut.
Do you realise that half of it is closed? our capacity is, according to the official site: East 7,500 Ponty 4,500 West 4,700 If half the West is shut that gives a capacity of around 14,350, we averaged 12,527 last season with hardly any away fans.
West Stand is probably the worst stand in the league. The ground itself is fine but the West Stand is not fit for purpose.
The photo they've chosen of Oakwell to illustrate the piece is the biggest deluge of a p*as that's ever been aimed at a plate of chips. Because the West Stand is cropped from the picture, Oakwell looks pretty good. We haven't got the best ground in the world, no one from Barnsley would make such a claim. But it's not the worst either, and it's far from the worst in the Championship. For big games the atmosphere at Oakwell is electric; it's us who are a bit quiet sometimes, nothing to do with the ground. What we do provide that's head and shoulders above most, is a large modern away stand that takes up the whole of one end and accommodates thousands. There'll be few away fans this season, when their club travel in numbers, who'll be claiming Oakwell to be one of the worst grounds.
I don't doubt that all 4 stands being the same would improve the acoustics, filling in the corners even more so. That said, when Oakwell is rocking, it's very loud, regardless of the West Stand.
It’s not the worst stadium either in looks nor atmosphere . Hillsborough for starters looks as tired as our west stand all around ground even the cantilever looks tired . However if it’s for getting away from car park after match they May have a point .
Joking aside, at least we have parking near the ground. If they were to include that, as well as our excellent on site training facility then we'd compare very well to most of others.
