We know about all that’s wrong with the WC being in Qatar but ffs lets start to leave politics out of Football for a change inc the knee thing
I suppose on the other hand, when Conservative MPs are taking lobbying money from the Qatar state its a bit much to expect footballers to lead the campaign about human rights when those in charge of the country are taking back handers from them.
Got to say I agree with the comments saying they should wear them anyway. The whole team, refuse to take them and let the ref send the whole team off. If we can't give up playing in a football tournament to stand up basic human rights I'd say its a lost cause.
But it isn't a basic human right in Qatar. Their interpretation of the Quran forbids the issues being highlighted. It's about time people around the world woke up and stop believing in imaginary gods surely. Religion has so much to answer for, causes more division than anything else around the world. As for the players they should only wear the agreed kit, no extra armbands etc. If they wanted to make a statement nothing would have stopped them from announcing the England strip as a rainbow shirt providing it didn't mention any movement or message such as one love etc. My thoughts is keep the football separate from the issues off the field. It's not as if the Qataris haven't heard the message loud and clear from around the world. But at the end of the day it is their country and their religious interpretation that defined the laws they impose.
I suppose to be pedantic Human rights don't exist at all. Rights aren't rights if someone can take them away. We in the western World are very privileged that our societies have moved to allowd us freedom and privilege. Sadly political agenda's have a huge impact on the lack of freedom and privilege for many people of the world. I do however agree with the sentiment of your statement. Politics shouldn't impact upon basic freedoms which which absolutely should strive to make rights for all.
Saudi Arabia are wanting to host the World Cup Finals next time they are due for the Asia area. I see more backhanders.
Football is coming home to a homophobic, misogynist nation. Just like old times then. When England won the World Cup homosexuality was illegal. No way this world cup should be happening in a country that has no interest in progression. FIFA can go **** off. So can Manchester City & Newcastle, taking their money.
The old politics has nothing to do with sport defence. The apartheid regime in South Africa loved it.
While I have said I'm disappointed that the players and teams at the world cup haven't stood up further on this I believe it was remiss to mention how corrupt and horrible a organisation FIFA continue to be.
Even the BBC admitted that the country is progressing and slowly reforming their stance. LGBQT will always be a slower adopter because of the fictional Quran and how Qatars rulers interpet the readings. Christian Bible isn't much better but I think a large part of western population have realised it is just a work of fiction and moved on. Wasn't it well in to the 2000's when same sex marriage became legal in the UK and we are supposed to be one of the most accepting and understanding of peoples beliefs etc. But I think your wrong to suggest they won't progress and this scrutiny will advance that, even though it may be a slow process.
