I recall him at other clubs as well, especially Shrewsbury Town and Norwich City, which was probably the pinnacle of his career. He did well at centre forward and centre half for us, but what I remember most about him was his going to Crewe Alexandra in a coaching capacity after leaving us. Crewe were short off players and registered big John, who promptly went out and scored a hat trick on his first game for the Railwaymen against Southport in a 4-0 win. He played seven games for Crewe in all that season and scored five goals. Old habits and genuine skill doesn't die. Condolences to his family. RIP Big John.
I remember the day before, our form teacher (Holgate) warning us that if we were going to be ill the next day, to make sure we subsequently submitted a well-penned parental note. Fortunately I was able to obtain such a note, and really enjoyed the match. During the game I soon realised that there were loads of such notes in existence. He scored a cracker which nearly broke the net at what is now the away end. Equally at home at 9 or 5, he was a proper handful for opposing 5s or 9s. RIP John Manning.
