I asked you earlier in the thread & will ask you again , name the players who we can afford & are capable of doing what you say .
I'm struggling to think of any midfielders we've had who have scored 12-20 goals over a number of seasons (rather than just the odd one). I think most that came close were also designated penalty takers, which presumably wouldn't be an option for anybody who we signed now.
Bit before my time, but it would be a bit sneaky to say "we've had them before" in such an off-hand way when you're talking about Ronnie Glavin! Hignett managed it in 99/00 with Barnard on penalties too, I think, although a quick look suggests he got at least one from the spot that season.
So did Brian Howard & Conor Hourihane. However, I also remember reading comments from Swindon & Plymouth fans claiming at the time we'd brought in poor players, who'd never score and that they would be better off without them!
On average 11 per 46 games, and that was with a good number of penalties. The point is that a 12-20 goal midfielder isn't something you just go out and pick up for half a million. We're looking at the absolute best of the best to ever play in midfield for our club - the all-time greats - and in a lot of cases they still didn't manage it!
The fact that we can only mention around 6 players within the last 30 years that scored consistently from midfield just goes to show that those types of players are like rocking horse sh it.
Oh I agree, they're not easily found or bought. It would be nice, though for a change, to have a player play for us for a number of seasons to actually find out if he could become a great goal scoring midfielder. I'm struggling to think of many who have stayed more than a couple of seasons.
I agree, but as I've just mentioned to Sestren, it would be nice to have a player play for us for a number of season to find out if he can become a great goal scoring midfielder. I'm struggling to think of many who have stayed more than a couple of seasons.
On the topic of "we have too many strikers" I could be wrong but I don't think it's unreasonable to assume that the Club will also be thinking about the number of forwards we have on the books; and like many on here, will also be looking at how we can move them on. We've clearly gone for an upgrade in quality, which has always been part of the plan. I guess it's pretty much impossible to unload those we need to unload overnight. It would also be pretty stupid and short sighted not to upgrade when we have the opportunity to upgrade. As Brian Mahoney (what a player he wasn't!!) has said earlier...the people who run our Club are damned if they do and damned if they don't. God Damn.
