I have a Fiesta and that's easy enough to operate. It has DAB but its no harder than finding an FM station.

Volkswagens usually are very basic... think they’ve just stopped using tape decks....

My car speeds the engine up to meet the new gear ratio and speed... so using it to slow down is out of the question....

If you gear down, the engine revs itself to the speed of the car.

I still struggle to use it!

I would recommend looking at the Hyundai i10 or i20.
I've just pensioned off my 2000 reg Hyundai Amica, I bought it secondhand 10 years ago to put us on with a cheap and cheerful car that I could afford to insure for my 17 yr old son to learn on....in 2018 it was still going strong and the only repair was a £30 gearbox mounting bracket. On the strength of it, my Mum bought a new i10 in 2010, that still hasn't had a breakdown or spanner laid on it.....I know a couple of people who have them and the general view is that they are well built extremely reliable cars....plenty of goodies for the money but not over reliant on the unnecessary electronics mentioned above.
