I remember it all mate. But without trying to make light of it. Some funny tales personally and some relayed to me. Lol. I've gone to task with a few on other sites. But my favourite was ripping into a met copper who said they were all the victims and none were the perpetrators. Of any violence. Ffs. I saw it first hand on several occasions.
Neil Kinnock the Labour leader and Norman Willis the TUC General Secretary were an absolute disgrace. The miners were left to fight alone, ironic as they supported countless unions in their strike action over the years.
I actually do not talk about it much ,simply because everyone & everybody has or had strong opinions about it & always believe their opinions are right & to be honest most people havn"t a clue, but until someone has actually gone through 12 months on strike then they are only guessing , I had a young family & went through every high , every low , every emotion & every possible circumstance you could think of & I rarely discuss it these days & I never get involved in political debate , that 12 months left me with a legacy & I will leave it at that .
Also Bill Sirs of the Steeleworkers Union . Sold us out by using scab coal saying we didn’t help them when they struck a year earlier . We’d stood shoulder to shoulder with steeleworkers on their picket lines .
One of the defining moments in union history mate was the Wapping strike ( printers union 1986 ) 5,500 sacked by Murdoch. Then betrayed by the EETPU who worked the presses. I’m glad i found out I didn’t have to join what was the natural union for myself ( EETPU) when I joined YW. And opted for the GMB. I felt sick at the thought at the time. I have been a steward for GMB for 25+ yrs. And can see the destruction of workers rights happening more and more. It’s time for all unions to stand and fight for workers rights. Regardless of the draconian laws that have made it so difficult to take action against unscrupulous employers. I also, before anyone pipes up. Believe the labour government’s and shadow governments have stood by and done very little to stop the tide. Those that voted Brexit did not think for one moment. The effect it would have on workers rights. They will reap what they sow.
Was at Wapping went down from Barnsley NUM offices in I think 1985 not long after the miners strike . The Sun newspaper had moved from Fleet Street i believe. Almost got arrested for doing nothing managed to shove the copper off and legged it . Was as bad as the miners picket lines down there , Murdoch joining in the union bashing which went into overdrive once the miners were beat .
Now this programme has just said in 1985 or whenever, miners were, on average, earning the equivalent today of nearly £40k. Is that true or is it, as I suspect, utter boll0x?
It’s utter ****** mate . Maybe some of the Notts working miners were getting that for a bribe but I can categorically tell you the vast vast majority of miners were nowhere near that . There’s a few things been said on this programne that’s ****** as well .
I thought so. Just like the line a few months ago that said nurses earned, on average, £33k a year. Lies which people will, unfortunately, lap up without knowledge.
said they could earn £10k per year with overtime used a couple of calculators online that convert to today’s money and most I got is £31k
This programme is a Tory public broadcast from beyond the grave (hopefully the gates of hell). If it was all so one sided why keep blocking an independent investigation into Orgreave? Because Brixton, Orgreave, Daniel Morgan, Hillsborough, Toxteth are all linked to the same people. Media propping up bent police and politicians. The unholy trinity! Still going on now, phone hacking, Grenfell and Covid. I joined law enforcement, come across plenty who said I only joined cos "we" shut the pits and you'd be on the dole. Only thing I doled out regularly was left hooks to those individuals (obviously at an opportune moment, bit like some them did in full riot gear). Funny thing is non of em ever swung back or complained. Deep down they probably knew they deserved it.
This programme is utter utter ****** . As you say it’s a Tory broadcast . Non of the things happened bear any resemblance to the tosh on here . They even trying to get across that they even cared about the miners striking or not .
Is there anybody else feeling as irate as I am watching this. Dig her up and Bury her again so we can all celebrate. How can any slack c u next Tuesday vote for these lying scheming bastuards Get ready Hartlepool, you reap what you sow. I'd forgotten how much I hated her and by the way , this lying cheating **** is probably more dangerous
I was only 8 in 1985 and although some of my uncles were miners my sad wasn’t so I wasn’t directly effected seen a few programs about the strike and Scargil always comes across as absolutely clueless and making lots of mistakes. Did you guys who were on strike at the time believe in him and think you were going to win or could you see he was doing things wrong ?
And now it's the police they've gone after, average wage and terms for new recruit are shocking. Expect folk to do a dangerous job with no backup. Weirdly the Police Federation have become realised they need to act like a proper union, cos they don't get listened to. Shame for them they can't strike and there isn't a coherent union presence in this country anymore. Only people who regularly beat this "government" are the Good Law Society. Who are exposing them daily, all whilst the Tories are spaffing tax payers money up against the wall trying to undermine legal process.
Wasn’t a case of believing in him tbh . Ed were in the industry and had first hand knowledge what they were doing to the industry and miners in particular . Lots try to make out it was a battle of personalities but that’s the media bubbles take . They were screwing us miners at all levels and we were regularly getting pickets from other pits because the coal Board had screwed them. We weren’t just doing what Scargill said as lots would have you believe especially those not in the industry . Anybody would think Scargill shouted and we took note . It wasn’t like that they were kicking us for years ever since that vow got into number ten . One thing the programme got right is the bitch wanted revenge because the miners had dared to strike for a living wage .
Rubbish ones . Lasted about two years then we had to start looking for jobs where there were none and every body else was looking .
I've not watched, and I don't intend to watch (I'll get angry), but if there are (intentional) inaccuracies to re-write history, I do hope that people in the know raise your complaints with Ofcom. https://www.ofcom.org.uk/complaints/complain-about-tv-radio-a-website
