Barnsley didn't have a D.O.F under Alan Clarke, Norman Hunter, and Paul Heckingbottom so we don't need one now. How much salary is he on 30k, 40k, 50k?? There is a footballer in that finance.

Without sounding rude mate but if you actually wear that on Saturday I will giggle to myself if I see it. Really is comical.

Way too early to judge. Our bigger sales will likely happen late in the day.

As it stands, we don't have a right back in the squad and only have one centre forward who is nearer 40 than our head coach.

Neither of those points are sustainable across a 46 game season.

It's pretty evident there's been a significant pivot away from what we've done previously. Hourihane seems way more involved and that can only be a good thing, though bizarre that the owners didn't trust experienced coaches to create styles of play and squads they needed, but have allowed a novice incredible latitude.

My issue initially was letting someone with minimal experience of a Sporting Director role have carte blanche. Those issues increased with hiding from interviews and blaming coaches for his recruitment and playing model.

It seems he's being managed by the head coach. If that's the case, I'm not sure what need we have for him given much of the analysis will be done by others.

I think I'm the 4/10 range currently given a lot of required activity hasn't yet occurred. If we can sell two players without harming the squad, a right back and at least one striker, while offing those Hourihane doesn't want to select, then I'll be content.

It all depends on if the director of football is good or not. If he was good i'd be happy him taking 100 grand a year if it allows Conor to put more emphasis on coaching than recruitment if that would end up in a few extra multi million pound sales.

Hecky and the staff did an amazing job but the work load they had to do was ridiculous.

Still early days but we look to have made some decent signings. There are still large holes in the squad (RB/CF) and I'm still fearful there could be one or two big sales that do us serious harm.
    Jury out until 1st September.

I seem to be some sort of anomaly. I’ve never shadowed anybody at the club, and certainly not the board or Mladen. I have no idea how hard he’s been working, how many players we’ve tried to sign, what the reasons are for our targets not coming to Barnsley, what players’ contracts look like, what our players and their agents are saying to Mladen/Conor about their own contracts/ambitions, what discussions are taking place between Conor, Mladen and the board, etc, etc. I therefore cannot form an opinion on how well Mladen is doing or how hard he is working, as he could be sat in his office playing Minecraft all day, or he could be working 18 hour days, flat out, and the reasons we aren’t signing all the players the fans want are all out of his hands. I suspect the answer is much nearer to the latter than the former.

Come Saturday I’ll be supporting whichever 11 players (or 10 if we get another ***** ref) are on the pitch, and if we have new signings that improve our team, great. And if one of our better players have left I’ll be disappointed, but I’ve been disappointed many times before. Over the past few windows we have struggled to bring in top quality players because we don’t have the money that many clubs seem to have. I don’t want to see us overspending though, and getting into the mess that Wednesday are in, and Bolton and Leicester regularly get themselves in. It’s also not my money. Well, about £300 is. But that’s nowhere near the millions the owners are shoving in year on year, and that kind of spending is unsustainable, so we have to cut our cloth accordingly.

But whilst we haven’t been able to bring in expensive signings we have brought in some very good players. I guess DKD is expensive by our standards and thankfully it paid off, despite many on here writing him off after 8-10 games. What’s more, we have been hanging on to our better players for longer than we usually do, and those we sell are going for decent money (e.g. Liam Kitching). So I’m not going to have a go at the owners either. Unless that pillock Conway still owns a bit of the club. Take a look around the leagues at what some owners are doing to their clubs and be careful what you wish for, if anybody is still wanting to ‘sack the board’. We perhaps suffer in the same way as many clubs these days, in that we are owned and run by business people, not football people. We wouldn’t have ****** up the McBurnie loan or got thrown out of the FA Cup if Spinksy was still running things. But that seems to be the way it is now.

So if we can’t spend the money that Wycombe and Luton and Stockport, etc, are spending, it calls for the players to work hard and the coaches to work with and improve what we have, and I just cannot imagine Conor resting until he has got us playing as well as we possibly can. Therefore any success this season will be due to hard work from the players and coaches, which is far more satisfying than spending £15m on a striker.

5/10 this window for him so far. We are too short in positions still and let's see who we lose by September.

I get that Gaz but still, for whatever reason we haven't signed a RB , now is a time for patience. Remember the old adage, marry in haste, repent at leisure.

You’re not on your own, I’ve pretty much said this all along too. It is for the owners to decide if he is doing a good job based on their criteria set out for him.
If as fans we aren’t happy with recruitment instead of making at best half informed assumptions we should be asking questions of the ownership group.

I don't dislike the the person, I dislike the waste of the job title that the coach/manager can do, and not waste money on an extra salary.

    I'm not a hater - can't hate someone you don't know.

I just think, based on 2 years evidence, he's not very good at his job at the club I support.

The window isn't shut. He can still pull some irons out the fire, but all this about recruitement done early / square pegs for square holes ......... I'm not convinced his 'performance' is going to improve.

Read this and see what you think
“My phone is red-hot anyway, but when you are having to do these sorts of (other) roles, it is just time-consuming and time is your most valuable commodity in this role.

“I am adamant that I cannot let it take my focus away from the grass. But something has to give and some other people have to come and help and that’s why we have got Maurice and his firm to come in and help. You never have enough time in the day anyway to do everything that you want as a head coach – we are short-staffed in that (coaching) department as well.”

In his defence. (Still think january was a complete shambles) He had to work to a strategy put to him by the board. Players stats. age etc. It appears some of that has gone out of the window. Conor has the final say. But provided with the evidence.
Conor has said he will not sign any player he's not checked out himself, that may be video evidence. (Plenty to go at.) and it's not always just what a player brings to the team. He checks out their qualities as a person and will not sign anyone he feels could upset the apple cart.
Age not a major issue as has been proven alongside his own opinion of a player and not the script.
He also uses the old scouting system if necessary. Sending someone out to view a player.
What he doesn't have. Is control of the purse strings. And Mladen works alongside. (Apparantly they have a good understanding of what can be achieved. And work together well. ) They both have to agree, or the deal may not be doable. Based on finance. And Conors ideals.
    Barnslejoe raises a valid point.

I find this idea that Hourihane will do well because he works hard utter nonsense.

If he does well it’ll be because of a combination of things like having an eye for a player, a good set up behind him & an ability to make good decisions in game.

Do people honestly think someone like Neill Collins came over from Florida uprooting all his family & then didn’t give his all?

They all work hard otherwise they’re out of the game long before they even get a job at a level like league one.

Conor was appointed full time in April. From the start he said he wanted to play 4 at the back.

We turn up for our first game of the season with zero full backs available.

I’d say useless was being generous……..

A total disaster and unfit for the job. I don't need a 'car park' meeting to change my mind.

As for Hourihane, jury is still out. Good first game tho.
