was just thinking how many full games our lads have to play from start, if we can only use 3 subs, larger squads can rotate from start, some got 2 first teams

That is not quite what I have said. Minority Report is about systems and not individual players. I have opinions about players, but I try to keep them out of Minority Report. Having said all that, I do not believe I was critical of Styles. I just said that with Williams now fit, it gives VI a chance to rest the wing backs and Styles lack of pace made him the obvious choice on the night. Styles has many very favourable qualities, but he is not the quickest. That is simply a fact.

If the opposition set up with a couple of speedy wingers, or wing-backs and they have players in the middle of the park, or up front who can pick the correctly-weighted pass over the top, or out wide, that's the weakness. I recall Jon Stead doing exactly that for Bristol City in our 5-3 defeat there some years ago. The wingers just tore us apart. We seem more savvy these days, though, and Brittain and Styles will no doubt be given more precise instructions as to how to defend that risk on both flanks.

Very true. Andersen got isolated out wide against Armstrong last night and had to take a yellow card to stop him. I know the example does not quite fit the circumstances, but that is what happens, and it is partly why Andersen picks up so many yellow cards.

If the WWE contest between Daryl Dike and Lenihan is anything to go by, we should have some really brutal physical battles against sides who try to match muscle with muscle. I liked the way that DK bundled into one of the Rovers defenders with such force that he just fell out of his way - no foul either if you use upper body strength. I think that DK will come good. It will settle him when he scores his first goal. He already has assists to his name.

Yes, there'll be more teams that do what Blackburn did last night, and decide they want nothing to do with our high press, which means we need that physical presence up front. Hopefully there won't be too many refs like on Sunday, who think it's a non-contact sport when it's our forwards challenging for a ball.

I thought you were referring to Williams over styles when you mentioned accurate passes instead of over hit balls in the general direction of the strikers

I believe that the difference last night was in the way that substitutions worked. VI knows before the game starts exactly when and how he will use his substitutes. Changing the front 3 together is fast becoming his standard practice. It is as if for the first hour, the front 3 are just chasing long balls to tire their defense and lull them into a false sense of security and well being. Balls are hit forward to feet, our midfield players come into play, and we start playing the game with a winning objective, rather than just an objective to tire the opposition. As for Blackburn, I felt their best team started the game. Their substitutions were a reaction to tiredness in their starting eleven, and they became less of a threat with every substitution. They were always a threat, because they always had the pace of Armstrong. He was the player that we were most frightened of, and he was the player who dominated VI's tactical thinking and planning.

I'm not sure where your getting bored from RR. I thought it was an entertaining game. I think we're playing some good stuff at times. Don't forget we're playing against quality Championship teams. The alternative is the first 19 games of last season, when we're getting whooped week in and week out. Now that was boring

There is not much that I can say about that first half that I did not say in my report about the Chelsea game. The difference was not our play. It was in the way that the opposition played. Chelsea wanted to play the ball out from the back. They wanted to try to football their way through the press, and our intensity was such that they failed to do so. Their desire encouraged us to play the high press that was supported by a high midfield line and a high defensive line. The pitch was not conducive to that type of game, and Chelsea lost the ball, time after time. Blackburn were not going to make that mistake. They picked a quick front 3, and we had to respect that pace, especially since Blackburn were not interested in playing their way through us. They hit almost as many long balls as we did, and some of them very nearly paid off. If the opposition is intent on hitting long passes, there is less point in the intensive high press, and it was noticeable that the front 3 did not work as hard. Once more, at half time I was left to rue our reluctance to get the ball down and play it to the feet of our front 3. The commentators described it slightly differently. They described it as rushing the pass forward, but in my opinion it is a deliberate tactic on the part of VI, rather than the incompetence of the players. It represents a reluctance on the part of VI to let the team risk getting caught out of shape too early. That first half was written off, and VI invested everything in the second half.

At half time, Styles went off. It has been hard to rest Styles and he has had to play 90 minutes of almost every game, but now Jordan Williams has got back to fitness, it will be easier to rest both wing backs. Williams is quicker than Styles, and that was probably the factor that swayed the decision towards Styles. The commentators were convinced that it was the physical presence of Morris and Dike that changed the game. I am not so sure. For me the main factor was starting to hit balls to the front 3, rather than hitting the ball beyond them and in their general direction. When you pass the ball forward more accurately, our central midfield players suddenly begin to get involved. They get into the game as the ball is laid back to them, and they start dominating the way that the game is played. It is more risky, as we saw with Blackburn’s late consolation goal, because it opens the team up to the counter attack when the pass is intercepted, and that is particularly true when the opposition has pace, but that is the way that football works. Teams risk conceding in their efforts to score their own goals. It is called entertainment.

The first goal was the real game changer. It meant that Blackburn had to risk more themselves, and our second came as a result of them taking more risks. Again, it is how the game works. Football is a game of risk and reward. What I do not understand is why it is necessary to go through an hour of sterility before the game opens up and an entertaining game of football can begin.

I’m pleased you noticed Williams contribution as well as Morris because I too thought he changed the game. His return from injury is like a new signing and he will give Ismael another head ache when coming to team selections

Wonder how long when added up the tippy tappy at the back and the time to get the ball into an attacking position.under Struber came to during a match. Because that had me drooling in my seat that did.

We can see that the system now works, in a brutalist fashion, it gets results.

Can we now say that we have the squad to make the system work?

We have 6 hardworking forwards so we can play a high tempo press for the whole game.

We have 4 first team defenders, 3 big lads who can cope with the more physical game and Sibbick who has a turn of pace to cope with breakaways.

In midfield we now have 3 players for 2 positions.

On the left flank we have Styles and Jordan.

On the right we have Brittain and ????

In goal we have 2 keepers pushing each other for that number 1 slot.
