I don’t think we’ve played a basic 4-4-2 this season too much - but it has certainly been a fluid system which fluctuated from 4-2-3-1, to 4-3-3 and at times 4-4-2 when out of possession. It wasn’t working. I think Stendel got a raw deal, and I’d have loved for him to still be manager, but I don’t think he’d ever have gone to a three centre back formation and for me given our struggles that was what was required, and in fact said so a few weeks ago. It was an encouraging performance , but lets see how we get on for the next half dozen games before we get carried away.
hi mate "For you, it appears to be about players. For me it is systems and tactics". Quote /unquote . Imho i do believe 5 3 2 i s a better formation for us... because it makes better use of the players we have at our disposal, added to the fact that we did have 3 of our best players in their positions available. This was always going to improve our chances....and it did. The press....well if it wasnt the press yesterday, then it was a "form of" maybe not as high. Also that style "the press" was the way our board wanted to play and recruited a coach and the players on that basis, so it was very succesful last season (goals against). However different gravy in this league, the players we are facing week on week are soooo much better and they have more knowledge, speed and class to counter that. You are right we have to think how we are to counter that. I was always taught that if you lack the skill try make up for that in sheer hard work. I believe (imho) that is the way for us...we have to out work the opposition and maybe defend a yard deeper and try hit our opponents on the break and work on set pieces to try nick points. West brom....wow they are good ...im hoping we can sneak a point but it will be very tough, they are slick, quick and very professional.
