Messi is the best, offers more than any other player.

    Pele was a fraud.

Santos and New York Cosmos were his only domestic clubs.

Cant argue with his record for Brazil though!

    Talent wise - Maradona
However, Messi has been more dedicated to his profession and ends his career on a fitting high.

if Maradona had the protection of the referees that Messi benefited from he would have been even better. A complete genius.

A fraud? Because he had the integrity to stay at his club until age moved him on?

He won 3 world cups! And in the process changed the way the game was played…

nah. obviously a phenomenal talent and somewhat iconic, but nowhere near the stats or achievement to get him close to GOAT status, for me. personally wouldn't even get in my top 10.

I just put him out there.
I reckon if he'd played for England and not Northern Ireland. Which limited his achievements and status. He would have pissed the top ten of all time imo.
Sources put him at No. 5.
A gifted footballer that people used to pay to watch. Put bums on seats.
Pat Jennings described him as the greatest player on the planet. An era that included Pele. He hadn't a weakness in his game. Players trying to kick lumps out of him, but they hadn't a clue. His downfall was his lifestyle which affected him in later years.
I'm not saying some of the players you quote don't have better stats. But you also have to consider the times and standard of opposition.

Exactly, nowhere near the definition of fraud.

I love the old footage of defenders trying to cripple Maradona but he still makes them look like complete fools. If he'd had more protection, every attempted challenge on him would resemble Terry Fenwick in 86.

can only go on what he's done though really, not what he might have done, had it been for a, b, c. unfortunately Erling Haaland will find himself in the same boat. at club level he will go on to be phenomenal, but the fact that he's Norwegian means he's never gonna get the opportunity to do it on the world stage.

Mbappe could go on to be in that bracket. his stats at 23 are insane. some way better than Messi's at the same age, and already has a World Cup under his belt.

The only people who thought Ronaldo was better than Messi was united and real Madrid fans and piers Morgan who I imagine spent most of last night in tears...

Messi is the most talented player who has performed for the longest consistently. I can't compare Pele, maradonna etc as there before my time.

I think it all comes down to personal preference, both phenomenal players but for me it’s Messi all day long, I still can’t forgive him for his “hand of god” plus he spent half of his career coked up.

I've seen a graph, which shows lovers of nature and art go with Maradona, whereas lovers of concrete and artificial grass prefer Leo.

What about us art-deco fans, who love concrete and art?

For me, Messi is superior to Maradona. However, in my opinion, Pele is the greatest of all time.
Other viewpoints are widely available. :)

It's got to be the Derry Pele. Paddy Mccourt for me.
