They don't have to, its been a poor Championship, my Blades supporting mates have said the same - they've been poor this season but the teams are so bad they've still got automatics. Maybe the fall out of Covid and because the bigger teams aren't splashing as much cash but Coventry, Sunderland, Luton and Boro... Look at where all four have been in the last few seasons - that's one of the poorest play offs that's ever been. Fair play someone's going to take advantage of the situation.
Or perhaps its just because in recent years they've just been run properly bud. Unlike Watford, Norwich, Cardiff, Stoke, etc etc. They deserve to be there.
It's been a tough League 1 because we haven't gone up automatic. Conversely you could say it's been a crap League 1 because 4 clubs have pulled away.
It has been a poor championship your right some of the teams in and around the play off some lost a hell of alot of games and were still up there. But the likes of Coventry Sunderland and Luton used the loan market well, had a good manager and a plan from owners down. We did none in our last season in the championship.
To put some context on the payrolls of Luton, Coventry and Barnsley. In 2022 Luton paid £18m, Coventry £16m and Barnsley £13m. Even those clubs we perceive as being similar paid salaries of 40% and 20% more than us. All three of the perceived ‘well run’ clubs lost about £7m each in 2022.
I’d argue it has been a poor league one. The fact we were so clear of those below in fourth, given how poor we were at times early in the season, plus the fact Wednesday got 96 points when they aren’t actually really that good a side but have a couple of very good players for the level tells you that. I think the level of both league one and the championship has been a bit lower than we’ve seen in recent years, but maybe that’s the chickens coming home to roost a bit as the rampant overspending at those levels isn’t perhaps what it used to be.
Always annoys me to see him doing well. Not because I dislike him or anything. We let him leave because he was too ambitious for us. I've no doubt he could have done the same with us as he has done with Cov had he got the backing he'd asked for.
Not too sure why folk think Coventry are a minnow* It's a City with a population larger than Nottingham.. with only one football team. And from the mid-sixtys spent forty years in Englands top division up to the 2000s
It’s not a minnow historically but compared to some of the big spenders in the championship it is. I was more referring to them been a minnow in terms of the quality of their squad.
Shows how bad it is in the Championship that a 7m loss in a year is considered sustainable. On top of this, Luton have broken their transfer record for Morris, paid a fee for Woodrow and others, and looks like the only fee they brought in was for James Bree.
And I'm a firm believer in the idea that, if you've done it once (reached the Championship Play offs) then surely you can do it again, maybe, some day ?. Had Val stayed I don't think we'd have been anywhere near as effective and we wouldn't have been in the Play off chase this time. But the way the club was run straight after a Play off season, was despicable and I'm sure it goes down as the worst ever season for all of us.
