Our future selves if we survive will look back at this as some kind of mass temporary psychosis which infected the Western world during the early part of the 21st century.
If they want to ‘live’ as a woman, then I don’t have a problem with that. But they can no more think themselves into being a female swimmer, than they can think themselves into having periods. The cruel fact is that allowing people to self identify means that biological women lose safe spaces. How would you feel if your teenage daughter had to share a changing room with a ‘woman’ flashing her dick? Or your sister escaping an abusive husband turns up at the local woman’s refuge to be met by a ‘woman’ with a history of sexual abuse sporting a beard? It might be a small minority of trans women who abuse our trust, but the law shouldn’t protect them to do so.
Nobody is saying she can't live as she wants, she should be able to live her life as she wants in all other aspects but its clearly an unfair advantage in sports like this, which if you are a woman training hard and giving it your all can't be right
It's not black and white. Its a huge spectrum and there are all sorts of factors at play. Aside from that, I just want to quote some stats from a Stonewall UK research paper, it's about 3 years old but still relevant. There are believed to be up to 500,000 people in the UK who present on the trans spectrum. 41% of respondents had been a victim of hate crime, 67% had hidden their gender dysphoria and 25% had been homeless for a period of time. There are also very high rates of suicide. And given one of our own supporters has beautifully and bravely shared part of their own story, their fears and experiences, please can we just be careful of our tone and just check what you think you are actually saying. Debate the science, by all means, but just be careful of that debate veering off into something which comes across as starting to lean towards something much more unpleasant.
Not on the same level granted but at the grand old age of 51, I decided to take up running again and joined a club. In that club is a Lady called Jane, everyone knows her as Jane at both the running club and her private life including her job as a PCSO. However if she enters official races she has to run as a male and under the name of Dave(original name). I’ve never pushed to officially find out why but am led to believe it’s something to do with UK Athletics rules.
It’s certainly an emotive subject. But we surely have to open our eyes to logic when this swimmer who wishes to be seen as a female, teases ‘her’ opponents by flashing her knob at them. If a ‘boy’ entered the female changing rooms naked, we’d all rightly want him locked up. I read the other day a report of a young girl raped whilst in hospital by a fellow patient. This patient raped this girl using their penis. And then we’re supposed to suspend logic to believe the medical professional who states, there was no ‘man’ on the ward, and that the attack was committed by a woman? I have absolute sympathy with all humans, but I also wish the right to challenge an illogical belief. IMHO Stonewall aren’t the good guys here, but that’s a whole other issue.
It's an extremely emotive subject for a trans person for sure. And I'll just reiterate my previous comment. Debate the science, by all means, but just be careful of that debate veering off into something which comes across as starting to lean towards something much more unpleasant.
I’ve no desire to make this more ‘unpleasant’ than it already is. You appear to not want to engage with the specific subject of the thread, which is Lia. How do you personally feel about this young swimmer flashing their penis at teenage girls in their changing rooms. Do you think that’s acceptable behaviour?
I'm sure you agree that's not typical behaviour of the circa half a million trans people in the UK and even more in the wider world?
I'm sure he doesn't either, but the title of this thread is Lia Thomas Transgender Swimmer, so I don't think he can be accused of going off topic.
I’m not suggesting it’s typical, but i am concerned that it’s allowed to happen. Im concerned that a movement largely driven by males is making the world a less safe place for females, particularly as it wasn’t particularly safe to start with. Can you imagine a girl swimmer taking a year out of training, coming back as a boy swimmer, beating all the boys and mocking them by flashing her vagina at them? It’s a ludicrous story on all fronts. I’m concerned that millions of happy gay adults would have been steamrollered into gender reassignment at an early age if they were young today. Being a bit of a tomboy, or a slightly effeminate boy shouldn’t mean you get dragged to the psychiatrist at an age where you’re not old enough to buy a scratch card.
As previously said, it is hard to talk about. It's sometimes scary in fact. Because as mentioned, if you try see both sides, you'll get labelled looney left who want to take away safe spaces for women and girls who desperately may need it, or, you'll get tarnished with a generalisation that you don't support trans and you deny their legitimacy, and (on twitter) you'll get brandished far right. The suicide rate is astonishing though. In alot of places, it's higher than holocaust victims and american slaves. I wish there was an easy answer for all involved who can do and be anything they wish.
And you’ve failed to answer my questions. I’m sure we’re on a similar page politically, I care about the lived experiences of all people. But this persons well-being appears to be treated with much greater care than the young girls they’re competing against.
That would be my solution. Then those who wish to transition from female to male also get a shot at it.
The physical advantage is obvious and unfair. When competing in college events as a male, Lia was ranked 554th. When competing in the same events as a woman, she is 1st.
A pub in Pontefract makes transgendered people use the disabled toilet. I was shocked to hear it was women that objected to them using the ladies. Blokes weren't bothered.
