Would perhaps need a second viewing as hard to score but I wouldn't say Taylor won the last 4 rounds. Was in total disbelief at the end, much like the crowd, the commentators, and the fighters themselves.
They ought to do what the do in some of the olympic sports where they discount the 2 most extreme scores and just use the middle 3. Helps get rid of some rogue judging.
Hard to conclusively give Catterall any of those last four rounds. Which is the point I’m trying to make around scrappy fights with little action. Catterall tried to coast the last four, and whilst they were both guilty of the stupid headlock and holding rubbish, Catterall was more deliberate with it. When that happens and you’re the challenger you’ll nearly always lose rounds on scorecards. I’ve seen so many ‘official’ scorecards and they’re all over the place. Boxing Scene, Carl Froch, Andre Ward, and two of the three judges have all four last rounds to Taylor. Boxing Scene has Catterall winning 114-111 but randomly gave Round Four to Taylor. Dan Rafael (who’s just the worst so no surprise here) had it 3-1 Taylor after four rounds. The faux outrage from Sky is even worse the following morning.
Hard to decide what’s extreme though isn’t it? Do you just take the scorecards that are the most different or the widest? Could be making fights closer than they are. What needs to happen is a blend of judges at the fight and at ‘home’ in a VAR type room. They also need to suspend judges with poor scoring and summon them before the boxing board of control to explain how they scored a fight. Way too many times a judge will hand in an awful card and then six months later they’re scoring another world title fight. Zero accountability. Williams vs. Lara about a decade ago was a full on robbery. All judges were suspended but that’s a rarity.
Why don't the judges have to lock in their scores for each round at the end of the round? Would prevent any dodgy fudging at the end.
That’s the worse thing about decisions like this. I remember John Ryder getting robbed in Liverpool against Callum Smith & then Smith got the Canelo fight & made about £7m while Ryder was back on undercards earning relative peanuts.
I haven’t seen this for a while, but one of the organisations made it compulsory that after five rounds the scores were visible. Called it open scoring and I thought it was the WBC - but it didn’t stay around for very long.
Jimmy Kelly upsetting Kenat Islam was nice Then Taylor-Catterall had a bad decision AWFUL AWWWFUL stoppage in the Gary Antuanne-Postol fight The Okolie-Cieslak show has to save boxing lol
Be careful sharing Teddy Atlas. Many an ‘unofficial’ scorecard from him be completely out of sync with what’s going on in the ring. Loves to get overly emotional to sell ‘brand Teddy’. Although he’s not wrong on this occasion.
Only one guy there has a facial expression that says they have won and only one guy there has a messed up face.
Thought this was an article worthy of sharing/a read. Same victorious score to Catterall as I got but with slightly different rounds, and I’d not even considered Wilder/Fury I as a far more outrageous debacle than Saturday night. Comments from Timothy Bradley and Andre Ward add credibility to it being a closer fight than the majority have been suggesting. https://www.boxingscene.com/sorry-close-fight-scotland-register-on-robbery-scale--164467
It probably deserves a thread of it's own. Was out last night so out caught the news reports and then decided to watch the highlights. It looked an amazing fight and some knockout in the last round. Good to see both boxers are okay. Also, liked the respect shown by Wood after the fight.
