I’m the first to pile on when England lose, but this thread is hilarious. Did we actually win or not? Difficult to tell reading the comments. This is the first euro qualifier Italy have lost in 41 games!! First win in Italy since 1961, those stats aren’t to be sniffed at! Yes, it wasn’t the greatest second half but let’s not forget Italy play massively cynical fouling football - you can hardly blame England for not playing flowing football when they’re getting pulled, pushed, grabbed, swiped and kicked every 5 minutes.

Back in the far off mists of time when Sheffield Wednesday could field England international players

It was tongue in cheek - Real Madrid wouldn’t get him out of newcastle if they didn’t want him to go, never mind the FA

I also disagree about that... :p

I suppose the issues lies with whether the FA would get another foreign coach. Because other than Howe (possibly Potter, especially pre-Chelsea) no English ones would be up there. I know people want an Engish coach there but personally doesn't bother me. I'd take Tuchel, Pocc etc in an instance. I'd love someone like Klopp or Arteta there - I reckon they'd be excellent with our attacking talent!

I was trying to be brief. What I should have said was first win against Italy IN Italy since 1961.

Arteta would be excellent, done a great coaching apprenticeship under pep, working wonders with a good set of players at Arsenal and knows English football inside out. Klopp might be nearing the end of his tenure at Liverpool if they don’t make top four this season and would be excellent. Poccetino will probably be back at spurs in a few weeks but he’d be a good choice too. Tuchel is pretty much nailed on for Bayern but again, if available, a great choice.

    There’s one big problem though.

The FA would appoint someone like Frank Lampard.

I'm surprised at the negativity tbh... a very good first half, should have been out of sight. Second half Italy had a great rocket up their jacksy I would have thought... they are good players and we're not going to have it all our own way... despite having all the ball they didn't really threaten until the mistake playing out from the back led to the goal (I admit I missed a bit) but the defence looked solid, did Pickford have many saves to make?
I thought the ref had a decent game, turned down most of the diving... Shaw took an age for the throw, if he'd been playing against us with 10 mins to go we'd have all been moaning for a card... deserved his second for his stupidity.. I thought Southgate's rethink worked, Trippier and Gallagher came on and made a difference. Much as I like Grealish, he was rubbish tonight, I would have subbed him earlier.

Some people's criticisms of England and Gareth Southgate are laughable. This is a really good England team with a decent coach. For a good portion of my life England were an absolute laughing stock. Nobody with a grain of intelligence thinks that now. A bit more self-belief wouldn't go a miss. But they are pretty close to breaking through and winning something.

For me England should be going into every tournament expecting to win it. Just like France, Germany, Italy, Holland, Spain, Portugal, Argentina and Brazil. There should be that expectancy all the time.

Self belief is definitely lacking. First thing I'd do is ditch three lions on a shirt and all the other crap celebrating failure.
