It's all speculation though isn't it and nobody really knows the truth of how it all works. Lee Johnson's comment could easily be taken as explaining the process, as oppose to it being a live example. And what's to say that you're forced to sign one of the four chairs when you want a table? Do you reject them all and the process starts again? As for Hecky, he contradicted himself in the media and tied himself up in knots looking back so it's difficult to assess some of his comments. I know that he used to personally meet players and convince them to sign for Barnsley (like the Man City youngster on loan who we got from under the noses of Leeds). When we signed Yids, PH had a full presentation of how he would fit in to the team, improve it, and in turn improve himself as a player. Plus McBurnie was identified as our number one striker target and PH didn't want us to focus on anyone else as long as that deal could be done - so it's a shame we never got that deal over the line. LJ signed Conor Wilkinson outside of the spreadsheet system. Danny Wilson didn't sign Josh Scowen. The club did.
If all this is legit which I would assume it is then this guy could be a brilliant appointment. Clearly seems keen and eager to learn and develop his own knowledge as well as being driven to improve players and make them fit and play an attractive way.
It explains why he is not starting work until July 1, he has some work in Hannover and he is completing the German Elite Coaches qualification. It all sounds good, hopefully the players will buy into his methods.
Just reflecting on what we Barnsley fans expect from our Manager/ Head Coach and had a look at the list of past "custodians" ( excepting caretakers) since I've supported the Club. The first man at the helm during my time, was Allan Clarke (1985-89). Since then we have had now twenty different Manager/Coaches. Of that number 7 namely Heckingbottom, Flitcroft, Davey, Hodges, Hendrie, Wilson and Anderson had not been in charge of a League Club previously. The remainder, Clarke, Machin, Bassett, Spackman, Parkin, Thordarsson, Hart, Ritchie, Robins, Hill, Johnson, Morais and Stendel had previous experience of being the main man. In all fairness, not many of those mentioned really pulled up any trees. It could be argued that two of the names shown re-Wilson and Heckingbottom having had no previous experience gave us the most memorable times during the last 30 years. Looking at Stendel's resume, it looks a bit harsh that he lost his job at Hannover 96 as they appeared already condemned to relegation when he took the job on. Let's hope he can motivate our lads, get them fit in readiness to give a good account of themselves in the coming season. He certainly deserves to at least be given a chance to succeed.
