What, the Steve Smith that has 1000 runs less than Root already? :)

Root can easily play until that age, he's fit enough and doesn't play that much cricket. Look at Jimmy Anderson, only comes out for the test matches now. He can beat Tendulkar :)

    Check out their stats.

Roots doesn't include today's innings of 128 not out.

Current test average is now over 50.

Centuries over accumulation for me every time.

You could play everyday of the year and score 10 runs. Is that an achievement?

I don't see your argument here, I'm saying more runs is better than centuries.

    Joe Root: 8377 runs
    Steve Smith: 7540 runs.

Joe Root is better than Steve Smith - end of. :)

Averages for me. No one to beat Don Bradman's record.

4 more runs in his last innings and he would have had a test average of 100.

    Not bad.

I hope day 2 we can push on.

India's back up bowlers have not helped their main 3 of Sharma Ashwin and Bumrah.

Already into the 9th over with the new ball.

The pitch looks like a road to bat on.

After 263-3 on day 1 is a score of 500 a minimum we should be looking at?

Root and Stokes at the crease with able batting from Pope Buttler and Bess to follow.

I fear that this may be such a good batting wicket that a result will be impossible. We could get 450 but then they bat for two days and get 500 plus.

Great to see Root doing so well but a potential double hundred might be all for nothing if we only get a draw

500 minimum, they won’t roll over easily and then the 3rd and 4th innings of the match might be a completely different story if it spins. Always the same in the sub continent, get your runs in the first innings.

It's bloody great having cricket back on terrestrial. I know there's normally a cricket thread when we play, but first day of the first test and we're on 160 posts! Good work, Channel 4.
