We play three forwards in this system. They’re expected to run their blood to water and only the wing backs cover as much intense running as they do. Meaning when you stick to the same system for 90 minutes your only way to change the game is to bring on ones that are more/less physical to change it up a bit, and to get those fresh legs on so the high press never falters. Add to that we’re allowed more players on the subs bench than ever before with nine players on the bench. It’s no wonder you’re seeing that many forward players. Take your point on mediocre, but original response still stands on wages and the fact we know more about signings and expect more in today’s world.
I’m pretty happy overall. I didn’t think we’d be in a relegation battle this season but I did think we’d be a few points worse off than we are currently. I find myself moaning that we’re just a bit of quality either side of Woodrow off a genuine play off challenge & then I think back to seasons where we’ve probably 7 or 8 first teamers off been able to challenge for the play offs so things are a lot better.
On Chaplin. He’s just a bit frustrating. He showed in December 19 when he had that incredible month that he has ability but the rest of the time he hasn’t really looked good enough for this level in my opinion. He seems to panic a lot when he gets the ball in good areas. Often tries a flick or a rushed attempt at a killer pass instead of getting hold of the ball & looking at his options. A few weeks back he showed composure cut inside & hit a lovely shot off the woodwork & it was nice to see but then yesterday he’s back to trying dummies & flicks & losing possession. He’s a decent squad player but I don’t think he’s good enough to be a first choice player with promotion hopes at this level.
Even taking into consideration that we play three forwards, the fact is, if we recalled players currently out on loan, we could select 10 forwards as our outfield players. None of these have come through our youth system, they've all been bought. Their wages make a substantial dent in our budget. And we're actively looking for another. It's already way too many for a club our size and I do find it strange that some people are arguing that this is a good use of our limited budget. Seems like a no brainer to me that it's not.
Theoretically is a key word in all that, for me. Fact is we're a small fish in the Championship. If there's a proven Championship striker, highly likely he's either genuinely outside our wage structure, or there's still another team that can offer better terms than our best offer. I agree we have too many strikers. I agree they're generally not good enough. I agree that having less would free up budget. I still don't agree that freeing up that budget puts us in a realistic position to sign a proven Championship striker. And I reckon our transfer history over the last 20 years backs that up. The lad at Wigan, a recent example. League One Club in financial turmoil, 500k on the table. The lad's apparently on £600 a week and we're offering £4k a week. This is a League 1 striker with 5 goals to his name, and we're still towin to get it over the line. For me we're miles away from signing proven Championship, regardless of how many players we get off the wage bill.
I honestly haven’t seen a single person argue that it’s a good use of our budget? I’ve seen people suggest that moving some of those on wouldn’t increase our likelihood of getting proven Championship quality in, and that ‘less is more’ is difficult for a club our size. My observation was that we have nine subs vs. five now and start with three forwards. I’d expect four on the bench if I’m honest as you should always have more attacking options at your disposal with a bench that size. It would likely just be Big Vic and Morris on the bench yesterday if you went back 12 months.
ah right you’d rather wait until someone else takes that gamble and then we can’t afford him. Che Adams anyone??
How is that a sensible comparison? Southampton paid £15million for Adams. Plus he had scored 22 goals that season for Birmingham at championship level.
where did Birmingham buy him from?? Where did he come from before Sheffield? we knew about him. We could have been that club
yeah but tbf at the time he wasn't a proven striker, was he. he would have been another lower league punt, with 9 goals from 40. if we signed a striker from ilkeston tomorrow, with 9 from 40, how do you think our fans would respond?
of course it’s a sensible comparison. you said you hope we don’t blow a load of money on a first year professional. I said we can’t afford them once they become established. Che Adams proves that exact point! It’s exactly the right comparison.
You know as well as I do we’ve signed plenty of lower league players, Martin bullock, Darren Sheridan, Callum Styles, there’s a few Brad Ash’ in there too I know.... maybe recently we haven’t got as lucky as we did before, maybe we’ve tried to buy better raw material in players like Morris who’ve come from League clubs. the fact remains though we can very rarely afford established players, we’ve got to take a punt here and there
It might be wort pointing out that all those players goal tallies were scored with clubs playing in divisions below the Championship so in effect were all gambles
