They were removed because of the amount of trouble caused by drunken passengers and the associated costs to keep them under control. Not that it’s made much difference, the last train from Leeds to Barnsley on Saturdays can be pretty rowdy to say the least!
I spent one "interesting" night in 92/93 in a waiting room in Leeds station after falling asleep on the last train home after a night out in Sheffield. That was certainly an interesting experience - especially with a psycho Geordie also in the room... First train back at 5:30 wasn't fun either....
