Kes was probably being filmed 200 yards away haha. My dad used to tell me about Ironside and Arblaster, back when he used to play goalie and centre forward for Fosters Bakery back in day.

I had a junior season ticket on the front row of West Stand (now upper) that year, having attended my first matches in the 67-68 promotion season. A lot of water has flowed under the bridge since then!

I was there. Good old Roy was generally reliable but had the odd mistake in him. I recall him letting another soft one in once when he was receiving a back-pass and somehow let it through his legs. Fantastic piece of film, with the old Kop and the muckstacks at Barnsley Main in the background. In those days you could never see the horizon because there was so much muck in the air from the pits and the factories, but most folk were in work and doing ok. Nice shot of a young Eric Winstanley, too. I recall being embarrassed by my granddad around that time; we were walking down Lindhurst Road at Athersley when Eric came the other way. My granddad (born 1892 and a lifelong Reds fan) collared him and gave him a long lecture about his positional play. Eric stood and listened, nodding in agreement and thanked my granddad for his advice. Two top lads!

What a fascinating bit of footage. It's amazing how much better the overall standard of the 3rd tier is nowadays, assuming that was a typical match.

Give over, both would give Sheffield United a pasting.

I was 15 and it was my first season supporting Barnsley having moved there a couple of years before. Used to walk from Church Farm Estate in Monk Bretton with a couple of mates who were a bit older than me Adrian summat.... Our (my?) nickname for Roy was Roy 'Cyanide' since he did, to me at least, seem to make a lot of errors. Used to love standing behind the goal in the Ponty end then changing ends at halftime walking round the back of the Brewery stand. usually meeting the oppostion coming the other way. That said if it was pissing it down I tended to stay in the Ponty as it was at least dry 'cos the Kop was very exposed. I avoided any trouble and only remember one brawl at the back of the Brewery stand though there might have been others. Not sure who the team we were playing was but think it might have been the Blunts although they were usually in the 2nd Division around that time I think. I remember standing on the slag heap in the Kop one cold Tuesday night watching us play Hartlepool when Earnshaw took the ball the full length of the pitch rounded the goalie at the Ponty end and put it into the back of the net. Seemed like stunned silence followed by everyone in the Kop going mad. Used to get 12-14000 gate regularly in those days and it was a crush in the Ponty. Remember the toothless wonder at the back leading the chanting as well.

I remember that I Missed the live match on tv and at Oakwell, as I was in Belgium with the college. My father described the Ironside howler after the game. He couldn't blame short-sightedness for that second one. The commentator gave him the best excuse he was going to get. I actually do remember seeing Ironside have a blinder away at Aldershot in a 1-1 draw during the promotion season.

Oh yes definitely there - mistakes like Roy's that day live long in the memory
As do the old days standing on the ponty end corner overlooking the snack and programme cabins
Got me licking my lips for a cup of bovril and a waggon wheel (which is about all they ever did)
Those were the days my friends

"Zigga zagga zigga zagga zig zig zig" (instead of "oy oy oy" - usually as he performed gymnastics. If crush barriers were an Olympic sport he'd have been a superstar lol.

To be fair when I saw the footage I rung him and gave him some advice on his positional play, so your old man was right. :)

First match against Tranmere that I remember was in 1970/71, an evening match that ended 0-0.
