One of the best players I have ever seen. Either on TV or in real life. And I don't just mean for Barnsley either. He was one of the best and I consider myself privileged to have seen him. Unlike a lot of my other posts, this is one opinion I hold true and is not clouded by time and memory gloss.
Remember Hunter telling him he had to drop back to help defence. Ronnie Glavin was like a cheetah very fast and left the defence standing. A cheetah is fast in bursts and Hunter killed his effectiveness and started dropping him He was a brilliant player
Like the way he speaks about McParland, not someone who was a household name. Partick lad, who gave him his break. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Davie_McParland
I'd still back him to be our top scoring midfielder and have the most assists over a season, old mate.
For me, the thing about Glavin was the way he could arrive late in the box, or find space and score from rebounds, like the classic goal against Rotherham when we won 4-2.
Ran the length of the pitch in the last minute to score when the keeper had saved Barra’s Effort. Enjoyed that as much as Banger’s hat trick. And the songs about Ronnie Moore.
I used to love the ones when he ran with the ball and slipped it past the keeper. Sheffield United away in the League Cup in 82 was magical as he just glided along and dinked it in. My two favourites were against Enfield in 81 when he did a one-two on the edge of the box and smashed it in, and at Wimbledon in about 80 when he ran down the left touchline with the ball glued to his feet, cut inside along the goalline and just slipped it past the keeper on the near post. It was a privilege to watch him. I can't imagine us ever having a player with his ability again or at least one we don't sell within a season.
