I well remember his classic attempt at a save against Tranmere Rovers that went straight through his legs, telivised as well.
Don Leeson was my first, followed by Alan Hill who was a very reliable keeper and forged himself a decent career in the game, coaching under Brian Clough for a number of years.
Watson for me hands down as he's the only Barnsley player I've seen who was arguably world class when he played for us. Had weaknesses but was very young for a keeper. Would no doubt have improved and gone on to play for England if he hadn't got injured. So quick off his line - there aren't many goalies you'd back every time in a 1 on 1, but I always felt Watson had a better than 50/50 chance of making a save, against any striker.
He was absolutely terrifying when it came to dealing with crosses though. Don't think the perfect keeper will ever exist
Muller cos he commanded the space around him (Big lad)..Davis was solid and agile. Watson would have played for England but young for the level we we're at then, another 2/3 years at that level and he would have been outstanding. different era's and defences so a difficult one.
All about opinions. Imho as much as I liked luke Steele and he performed the greatest show ever by a Barnsley goalie. At anfield. I still think Muller was the best. Closely followed by Watson. Steele 3rd. But we have had may more good ones imo than bad. Young uns allus are spectacular. But experience cuts out the need. People are eager to criticise those coming from a lower level. But experience is the Key. And prospects need to go out on loan at a lower level. I think Killip is the prime example. More than capable. Not bring in someone like Solina who had very little game time. Anywhere of note.
From memory, both Luke Steele and Bobby Hassell had taken pay cuts to stay after the great escape season under Flicker. Both were asked to take another when we were relegated. Steele had aspirations of playing for England, at a time where there were so few top English keepers, so went to Panathinaikos to try and make a name for himself in the top tier there.
Yeah I know it seems like rats deserting a sinking ship and all, when players leave after relegation. But sometimes there are other circumstances, like here with Steele. He had some real quality about him and while it was understandable, it made it harder him leaving at that time. I'd forgot though, that he went to play club football in Greece.
Yeah exactly, and that's why he wasn't "world class" in my opinion. Think of the goal on the opening day of the Prem season, his ridiculous mistake against West Ham and John Hartson. He was just mistake prone I'm afraid, when it came to crosses. But admittedly, other parts of his game were excellent at times.
