I know mate. It was a general comment in a Glastonbury thread really but quoted you as you mentioned her first. Speaking out loud more than nothing.
I always felt like Glastonbury didn’t need to go that way. It was so unique that it pulled in people of all ages and by its nature you naturally attracted youngsters to replace those growing up and choosing not to go. I just hope it’s not trying to go down the Coachella route. Style over substance and a million miles away from the early days. Just a scene for influencers to be posing outside stages and pretending they’re important backstage.
As you say, it'll sell out regardless. So if you can attract (probably) one of the 5 biggest artists in the world to play, you'd have them surely.
Completely depends on your festival objectives, the crowd you attract, who you want to attract next year. Your headliners are only booked to raise the profile to those who don’t have a ticket rather than the people who attend. Eilish, McCartney and Lamar is a very, very weak Glastonbury headlining trio for the festival it is/once was.
But I don't think they'll ever fail to attract people to Glastonbury, particularly as it seems (from what I've heard rather than personal experience) such a diverse crowd anyway. Even if you think it's a weak line-up/headline line-up this year, no doubt it'll sell out next year still. As you said earlier, it could be about attracting a younger audience. Your typical demographic might not be fussed for Billie Eilish, but there's undoubtedly an even bigger demographic that is. The beauty of music festivals for me is that you can get your moneys worth, without even seeing a headline act, if you didn't want to.
It’s absolutely trying to attract a younger demographic. That’s my point. But by doing that it’s losing what made it special. Which is again my point. Glastonbury is unlike any music festival in the world, but the line up overall is a pretty weak one compared to previous years over the decades.
I’ve only watched it on TV , I think all those flags in front of the stage would annoy me , but I know people who go every year and don’t go anywhere the main stage acts . I think it needs something like this to liven things up ( warning bad language)
This is only my opinion and so, according to Mrs Tonjy means very little, but I think there was only one genius in the Beatles. (And it wasn’t Paul)
Not sure why you’re having a pop at me like, but knowing every one of his solo songs doesn’t make them any better.
Erm… Because you said that his solo output is poor. You can surely only judge that if you have followed it reasonably closely. As someone who has all his solo output, I disagree. That’s all. We all have the right to an opinion.
I saw Macca in Sheffield about 20 years ago. Great gig 2 and a half hours of quality stuff his band was brilliant and he supported himself (The Fireman).
have you seen Get Back mate, the Beatles doc on Disney- if not it’s worth so for a perspective that may change your mind !
Billie Eilish will be the youngest ever headliner and Paul McCartney the oldest. I also think they wanted Taylor Swift to headline Friday but she couldn’t do this year. The overall lineup looks ok but the headliners aren’t the strongest it has to be said. To be honest it’s closing with Kendrick Lamar that bothers me most; don’t get the hype around him at all. Each to their own though.
Gutted Taylor Swift couldn’t do it, probably the greatest female songwriter of this generation. A great role model! Not into Rap music at all so not fussed about Kendrick, & personally don’t get the hype around Billie Eillish, not the best act for headlining a festival. I mean she doesn’t really sing does she?
