This is a massive blow for me. He's been superb. Classy, not a show pony, quietly getting on with his job. A little more communication trough interviews may have been nice, but I can't wish to deny him a huge opportunity (though it may be very short term if the owners dispose of Nice), a significant payrise and a team in and challenging again for the Champions League, all in his native country. I guess Stendel is next when a Championship team have a bad run of form and want to play aggressive high tempo attacking football.
I wish GG all the best & fully understand why he wants to take the job. It is a shame a replacement isn't in place, but it may be one has been found, but is working notice, who knows. I don't think it's a bad thing Conway is taking over for now. He's pretty hands on anyway & should keep some continuity in place when the new man (or woman) comes in. Anyone coming in will look at how previous people in the role have faired & both Mansford & GG have had moves up the footballing pyramid, which should mean getting a good CEO in place easier. Like everyone I'm worried about the final day of the transfer window. After past Januarys, that is rational.
Finding a CEO isn’t like signing a player. It doesn’t just happen overnight unless all parties agree which is pretty unlikely. Could be anything up to a six month notice period for such a senior role, and GG was only likely heading to Nice once all their drama started happening which was about six weeks ago? Having Conway step in works perfectly, I’m sure the hunt for a successor is already well underway. As an aside, my old company went two years without a CEO with the chairman in an ‘acting’ role. And that wasn’t some tinpot company. Was probably turning over 200 times that of Barnsley FC
