Me for one. Used to watch match of the day mainly to see the Best player the world has ever seen. Imho. Never failing to turn it on during his best yrs. Till booze n women took him over. ( could still put on a show even at his worst) Pat Jennings putting it right when Pele was regarded the best player in the world at the time. Saying George, in his opinion. was the better player.
Was there myself, same match, same time, same experience. Horrific few seconds, I think we went on to lose 1-0
My (late) father took me to see Besty, Charlton, et al at Hillsborough one evening in 1969. Wednesday were on the right lines trying to mark him out of the game. He only got away twice that night. Wednesday 1 Man Utd 3 (Best, 2). Fantastic. But still my favourite player seen live ever was/is Eddie Gray. As Revie said: "He could run on snow and not leave footprints!" On the crowds issue, that League Cup game against Man City was just about the scariest I've witnessed at Oakwell. In those days, the crowd on the old Terrace used to wander round the back of the stand either side of halftime to be nearest the end Barnsley were kicking in to. Grace of God, and all that.
I never felt in danger at any Oakwell match, 30,000 plus crowds or not. Not having the pens (like at Stoke) probably helped keep the crowd more fluid. A crush that can move sideways in either direction is safer than one jammed against rigid fencing or walls.
