I'm only interested in this as a couple of charities are due a bit of money. Whichever side of the bet won is irrelevant to me.
I'm going to start out by saying that I assume Jay was a bit drunk when he wrote this, he doesn't generally post stuff like this unless he's had a bevvy or two. However, accusations of self-interest were made, acusations that I am only thinking of myself, that I have no interest in society as a whole, that I am the bad person here. 1 - The money - what I do with my money is my business and no-one elses. If I choose to spend my money on drugs or alcohol or hookers is my business. If I choose to give it away to good causes then that is my business. Just because I keep that business to myself makes me no better or worse a person that someone who exhibits their great charity work on here for all to see. Do I give to charity, yes, do I keep that to myself, yes. 2 - Self-interest - The bet was "will we still be wearing masks on July 15th. I said no, TM said yes. The bet arose from a discussion on civil liberties, TM argued that restrictions should be lifted, that this was the thin end of the wedge and that things would not go back to normal, I argued they still needed to be in place and that without them we could see an increase in cases but that things would go back to normal eventually. TM was advocating for civil liberties, I was advocating for reducing the incidence of the virus. I don't see either argument as being self-interested, both are thinking of the wider society, both have their good reasons. I'm not sure why you chose the interject in this matter, it was uncalled for and unhelpful.
