They decided in crocks and past failures instead. Wood should never be selected for test cricket. He's made of glass.
Definitely shouldn't have taken him, given he was already on painkilling injections before the first test. That and Robinson's injury / fitness makes the decision to leave both Broad and Anderson out equally baffling. Can see Woakes wasting the new ball again with his combination of half volleys and short wide long hops, that he seems to favour away from home.
I read that Woakes is much more effective in England because we use our own “ Dukes” ball and the overseas balls don’t suit him. Nothing to do with his poor deliveries then ?? His away record is very poor but his home figures are excellent. It doesn’t take rocket science for the selecters to decide when to pick him …. does it ?
And we’re underway, with demon bowler Chris Woakes opening the bowling and Overton following. How did we get to this??
Disappointing first 10 or so overs. Everything either wide enough of off stump to leave, or on the pads. Too easy for them at the moment.
I did say things can only get better. No point anyone having a go at how England batted until we saw how West Indies got on. Now we can see our score isn't bad.
So, having seen Overton bowl poorly with the new ball, then bowl a bit better with an older ball, Root decides to give him the second new ball.
Just as things were looking up....What a horrible time for a stupid run out when we'd only just had our partnership broken.
