I noticed that as well. I wonder what the point of the design was. Better view of the goalmouths maybe?
The stand follows the line of the street. Better view of it on Google maps. The stand design is one of Archibald Leitch.
Thanks for that Ian. I just learned two things: 1) Dens Park has a Leitch stand 2) It's on Tannadice Street!
Well nearly right Merde. As the road comes in from the left off of Provost Road that is Sandeman Street and Sandeman Street continues to the left of the fork in the road with Tannadice Street taking the right fork. But you are correct in what you say about Dens because their main entrance is on Tannadice Street just where the road separates. Now returning to the Leitch Stand I’m positive that it is second hand and it was transported here from either Ibrox or Hampden.
That is Gussie Park our Astro turf training ground. But it was a ground belonging another Dundee Club way back at the turn of the19th century. I’d need to check as I can’t remember but the club might have been Dundee Wanderers. Not sure but I believe Tannadice was originally called Clepington Park. Now when Dundee Hibs now called United decided to buy and play at Tannadice the owners who might have been Wanderers, it’s all so confusing, removed everything. Stand, goal posts, terracing in fact anything which could be moved they took. There is information of it all on the internet if you were at all interested in the history of it all.
I've just been having a quick look at the history of the ground. I can't find any information about the stand having been moved, although I know that was something that happened from time to time in the past. What was especially interesting was the shape of the ground - I didn't realise that it was a bowl with a greyhound track around the pitch. Interesting looking, but the views of the playing action must have been atricious!
Yes Merde Dens did have a track around the playing surface as did lots of Scottish grounds from the early days. I’ll see if I can find an old picture to post. I’m positive about The stand being second hand.
